A p p o i n t m e n t s Jason Casden has been appointed head of software development at the University of North Carolina Libraries. In this position, Casden will lead a software development group of 12 full-time employees. Most re- cently, Casden worked as the associate head of Digital Library Initiatives at North Caroli- na State University (NCSU) Libraries. He was previously lead librarian for Digital Services Development and digital technologies de- velopment librarian, both at NCSU Libraries. Sarah Barbara Watstein, university librar- ian and university accreditation coordinator at the University of North Carolina (UNC)-Wilm- ington, has been named the new dean of the Lemieux Library at Seattle University. Watstein brings to her new role nearly four decades of experience in public and private institutions on both coasts, including the University of Cali- fornia-Los Angeles, Virginia Commonwealth University, Hunter College, and California State University-Long Beach. Watstein has more than 50 publications, including refereed journal ar- ticles, monographs, reports, and books. Her primary areas of scholarship include AIDS and infectious diseases, information technology, and reference services and sources. Kimberly Shotick is now assistant dean for user services and outreach at Illinois In- stitute of Technology. Retirements Jim Rettig, library director at the U.S. Naval Academy, retired May 31, 2017, concluding P e o p l e i n t h e N e w sAnn-Christe Galloway a career of more than 40 years. He served as university librarian at the University of Rich- mond and in administrative positions at the College of William and Mary and the University of Illinois-Chicago, and as a reference librarian at the University of Dayton and Murray State University. His reference book review column ran in the Wilson Library Bulletin and online for 18 years. His Distinguished Classics of Reference Publishing received the G. K. Hall Award in 1993, and he received other awards for contribu- tions to reference service and reviewing. He has chaired a number of ALA committees, served as president of ALA’s Reference and Adult Services Division and as ALA president (2008-09), and was named distinguished alumnus of the year by the University of Wisconsin-Madison SLIS. Deaths Thomas Martine, assistant order librarian at Princeton University Library in New Jersey, has died. Martine had worked at the library for 41 years.
