Arizona State University (ASU) has been awarded 
a $380,000 grant from The Andrew W. Mel-
lon Foundation for a three-year implementation 
project to reinvent the library’s strategy and 
practice for open-stack print collections. The 
work will enable the ASU Library to design 
and develop inclusive library print collec-
tions to engage, educate, and inspire scholars 
and learners of the ASU community. Under 
the leadership of University Librarian Jim 
O’Donnell and Associate University Librarian 

for Collections and Strategy Lorrie McAllister, 
“The Future of the Arizona State University 
Library Print Collection: A Collaborative and 
Data-driven Approach to Stack Design and 
Curation” follows a yearlong planning pro-
cess, supported by the Mellon Foundation, 
in which the ASU Library identified issues 
and options affecting the design of the next 
generation of open-stack print collection for 
a research library.

The University of Oregon (UO) was awarded 
a $300,000 grant from The Andrew W. Mel-

lon Foundation to support enhanced col-
laboration among campus libraries and 
museums, and to encourage increased 
use of library/museum assets in research, 
teaching, and learning. The award funds a 
new program led by the UO Libraries and 
the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art (JSMA) 
that will issue six Mellon Fellowship Grants 
to UO faculty throughout the initiative’s 
three-year duration, and will provide in-
tegrated library/museum education and 

support services 
to develop and re-
alize the Fellows’ 
p r o j e c t s .  T h r e e 
Mellon Fellows will 
be chosen for 2018 
to 2019 and three 
for 2019 to 2020. 
The program will 
use Mellon fund-
ing to provide in-
centives and direct 
s u p p o r t  f o r  U O 
faculty members 
who want to col-
laborate with JSMA 
and the libraries 
to incorporate li-

brary/museum assets into their teaching 
and research. Projects may include, but 
are not limited to, the development and 
use of new learning objects, exhibitions, 
research publications, and digital schol-
arship projects, focusing on collections, 
relevant expertise, and strategic priorities 
that span both organizations. One aspect 
of the grant is for the creation of the first 
joint library/museum position for a post-
doctoral fellow and two graduate employ-
ees, who will help carry out the program’s 
activities. An added benefit of the grant 
is testing a new graduate learning model 
that would contribute to the professional 
training of emerging library and museum 
professionals.
