Lauren Pressley, director of the University 
of Washington (UW) Tacoma Library and an 
associate dean of UW Libraries, is the 81st 
president of ACRL.

“I begin my presidential year with enthusi-
asm and excitement. Serving as vice-president 
has provided many opportunities to meet 
members, learn more about the exciting work 
happening in academic and research libraries, 
and to plan for this coming year. 

“Most recently, the Appointments Committee 
and I have worked diligently to finalize com-
mittee appointments. Our member volunteers’ 
enthusiasm for this association is impressive 
and inspiring. I am also delighted to serve as 
president during the upcoming ACRL 2019 con-
ference, to be held April 10–13 in Cleveland. The 
conference theme will be ‘Recasting the Narra-
tive.’ You can learn more about the conference

acrl.org/, and I hope to have the opportunity 
to connect with many of you there. 

“The 2018–19 year should prove to be 
one of important work across all of ACRL. I 

will help to promote and advance the Plan 
for Excellence and ACRL’s new signature 
initiative focused on equity, diversity, and 
inclusion. This signature initiative is designed 
to permeate the work of the association, and 
I look forward to championing the important 
equity, diversity, and inclusion work that will 
come from it.

“It is an honor to follow in the footsteps 
of a long line of exemplary ACRL presidents 
and to work with our talented membership 
and committed staff. I would like to thank our 
many members who volunteered their service 
to the association. The high level of member-
ship engagement, the leadership and staffs’ 
responsiveness to current trends and issues 
in the field, and the strategic approach ACRL 
takes as an association give me great optimism 
for the future of our profession. I look forward 
to working with you all in the coming year 
and hope to see you at ACRL 2019.”

As president, Pressley will preside over the 
ACRL Board of Directors and ACRL Executive 
Committee, and plan ACRL’s major program 
at the 2019 ALA Annual Conference. She will 
work with the ALA president and other divi-
sion presidents representing ACRL both within 
and outside of ALA.

Pressley has been a member of ACRL 
for 14 years, beginning in 2004. During her 
membership with ALA/ACRL, she has served 
as a councilor-at-large on the ALA Council 
(2010–present) and as a member of the ALA 
Resolutions Committee (2013–17). Previously, 
she served on the ALA Presidential Advisory 
Committee (2013–14), the Peter Lyman Memo-
rial/SAGE Scholarship in New Media Commit-

tee (2008–11), the Emerging Leaders Subcom-

Status of Women in Librarianship (2005–09). 
Her work in LITA includes serving as a LITA 
Emerging Leader (2008), LITA Committee 
Chairs coordinator (2014–16), director-at-large 
on the LITA Board of Directors (2011–14), as 
a member of the LITA Forum Steering Com-
mittee (2012–13), and on the LITA Budget 
Review Committee (2012–13).

Her work with state, regional, and other 
national associations includes serving on the 
New Media Consortium’s Horizon Project 
Advisory Board (2010–13), as a founding co-
chair (2014–16) and advisory board member 
(2016–17) of Library Pipeline, as secretary/
treasurer for the North Carolina Library Asso-
ciation’s Technology and Trends Round Table 
(2008–09), and cofounder of the NC-Library 
Instructional Technology Group (2008).

She is a member of Beta Phi Mu, and was 
a participant in the University of California-Los 
Angeles’s Senior Fellows executive leadership 
program (2014). She was the recipient of the 
Bea Kovacs’ Outstanding Alumni Achieve-
ment Award from the University of North 
Carolina-Greensboro, Library and Information 
Studies Program, (2018), Distinguished Alumni 
Early Career Award at the University of North 
Carolina-Greensboro, School of Education, 
(2011), was a Library Journal Mover & Shaker 
(2009), and participated in the NCLA Leader-
ship Institute (2008).

Her publications include coauthorship 
of “Evolution of Liaison Librarians” in SPEC 
Kit (ARL 2015); coauthorship of “Manager, 
Librarian and Web Developer: How a Multi-
disciplinary Team ReImagined LibApps,” in 
Aaron Dobbs and Ryan Sittler, eds., Integrat-
ing LibGuides into Library Websites (Row-
man & Littlefield 2016), and authorship of So 
You Want To Be A Librarian (Library Juice 
Press 2009).

Karen Munro, associate dean of libraries, 
learning and research services, at Simon Fra-
ser University (SFU), has been elected vice-
president/president-elect of ACRL.

“I am honoured and excited to be incom-

ing vice-president/president-elect of ACRL. My 
past 16 years within the association have been 
interesting, challenging, and rewarding, and 
I’m eager to continue working with colleagues 
to strengthen our professional home.

“As I contemplate joining the ACRL lead-
ership team, I’m keen to learn more about 
the strategic work already underway across 
the association. In particular, I’m interested 
in the work that so many people are doing 
to make our association, our institutions, and 
our profession more equitable, inclusive, 
and welcoming. I’m interested in the efforts 
we are making to understand and anticipate 
new roles for academic and research library 
workers, and I’m looking forward to further-
ing our robust engagement with student 
learning through the ACRL Framework for 
Information Literacy. This is a transformative 
time for our profession, in which we must 
continue to champion the value of library 
and cultural work in increasingly complex 
contexts. I’m interested in adding my voice 
to the conversation. 

“ACRL is a powerful member-driven as-
sociation, and it has been a springboard for 
me in many stages of my career. I’m grateful 
for the opportunities I’ve had, and I want to 
ensure that others can enjoy them, too. It’s 
important to me that our association is as 
flexible, nimble, and legible as possible, and 
that the wealth of professional development 
that ACRL offers is available to everyone who 
wishes to take advantage of it. I hope to use 
my leadership role to continue shaping the 
organization in ways that will best serve the 
membership.

“I want to thank SFU Library Dean Gwen 
Bird and all my colleagues for their support 
for my candidacy—as well as my absolutely 
stellar cocandidate, Penny Beile, who made 
standing for office a truly enjoyable experi-
ence. I’m looking forward to joining Lauren 
Pressley and Cheryl Middleton, as well as the 
entire ACRL Board and all members who stood 
for office this year, in the work of leading the 
association.”

During her 16 years of ACRL member-
ship, Munro has served as chair of the ACRL

Sections Council (2008–09), as ex-officio 
member of the ACRL Research Coordinat-
ing Committee (2008–09), and as cochair 
of the ACRL Conference Planning Green 
Component Committee (2007–09). Within 
ACRL sections, she has served as chair of 
the ACRL Instruction Section (IS) Nominat-
ing Committee (2014–16), as a member of 
the IS Advisory Council (2013–16), as IS 
member-at-large (2013–15), as chair of the 
IS Conference Program Planning Commit-
tee (2010–12), and as an intern for and as 
chair of the IS Research and Scholarship 
Committee (2006–07, 2007–08). She served 
as secretary, vice-chair, chair, and past-chair 
of the Literatures in English Section (LES) 
(2006–07, 2007–10); as initiator, chair, and 
as a member of the LES New Members Dis-
cussion Group (2004–08); and as a member 
of and as chair of the LES Section Planning 
Committee (2003–05). She was also a mem-
ber of the ACRL Western European Studies 
Section (WESS) Research and Planning

Committee (2004–05). 

Munro’s work with state, regional, and

Northwest Conference Planning Committee 
(2010–14, 2014–17), as member-at-large of 
the Information Literacy Advisory Group of 
Oregon (2012–14), as the Oregon University 
System representative on the ACRL-Oregon 
Board (2011–13), as the Librarians’ Asso-
ciation of the University of California (UC) 
representative on the UC Heads of Public 
Service Information Literacy Common Inter-
est Group (2006–07), and as a member of 
the UC Berkeley Librarians’ Association of 
the University of California–Berkeley “Aca-
demic Library 2.0” Conference Committee 
(2006–07). 

Munro received the University of Oregon 
Libraries Solari Incentive Award (2014). She 
was featured as an ACRL Member of the 
Week (2009). She received a UC Berkeley 
Townsend Center for the Humanities Fel-
lowship (2007); a UC Berkeley Mellon Li-

brary/Faculty Fellowship on Undergraduate 
Research (2006); the University of British 
Columbia/British Columbia Library Associa-
tion, Neal Harlow Prize (2002); a University 
of British Columbia Graduate Fellowship 
(2001); a North American Serials Interest
