Thanks to the strong cooperative efforts o f ACRL sections and committees, fourteen program sessions are being presented. Most are jointly sponsored by two or more groups. The program focuses on: ■ The development and use o f international electronic networks as a mech­ anism for information access. ■ Personal networking as a professional development activity to learn o f developments in the larger society. ■ Intra-professional networking to communicate the vital concerns o f one segment to other segments o f the profession. These points o f focus are critical to the advancement o f the profession and to the improvement o f customer service in academic and research libraries. Acquiring Librarians Want to Know: Acquisition and Collection Development of Video Resources ALCTS A-V, ACRL Media Resources Committee, and Video Roundtable Saturday, June 25, 9:00-11:00 a.m. Nationally known library experts will speak on issues critical to every library’s success in intelligently acquiring and managing video materials. Topics include: the basics o f video formats, licensing and copyright issues, and collection de­ velopment considerations. Binding Together a Multicultural Society: Challenges for the Academy ACRL Afro-American Studies Librarians, Arts, and Law and Political Science Sections Saturday, June 25: 2.00- 4.00p.m. It once was assumed that immigrants to the United States would become part o f the “melting pot,” adapting to an Anglo-American culture. This assumption has clearly been challenged by the demands that w e both recognize and recast ourselves as a multicultural society. The result has been an ongoing debate on multiculturalism and what it means to be an American. Dr. Sheldon Hackney, chairman o f the National Endowment for the Humanities, will address the is­ sues informing this debate. A panel o f reactors will respond. What Me— A Leader? ACRL University Libraries Section and the ACRL Professional Liaison Committee Saturday, June 25: 2:0 0 - 4:00p.m. Today’s academic environment requires that librarians at all levels, regardless o f position or title, become players and leaders in all spheres. Speakers will explore the personal traits and skills, opportunities made or encountered, per­ sonal and professional motivations, and risks and rewards o f leadership from a variety o f perspectives. They will reflect on the decisions, actions, and net­ works which enabled them to influence their workplace and expand the role o f the library and librarian on campus. Emerging European Writing: Visions and Voices of the New Europe ACRL Western European Specialists Section Sunday, June 26: 8:00-11:30 a.m. The focus o f the program will be on current or emerging trends in Western European writing. Writing is view ed in a large sense and can also incorporate philosophical and ideological trends. The speakers may also relate these trends to the recent socio-political changes. The program will focus on the countries Germany, France, Italy, and Portugal and hopefully be o f considerable informa­ tional value to librarians working mainly in collection development. Cultures of the Caribbean: Diversity and Transformation, Research and Resources ACRL Anthropology and Sociology Section Sunday, June 26: 9:30 a.m.-12:30p.m. MIAMI NOW! This multicultural hot spot is a vortex o f change (demographic, social, economic, and political) reflecting forces at work in both Latin America and the United States. Three noted scholars will share their expertise on the history and development o f anthropological and sociological research on the Caribbean and with Caribbean populations in the United States. Also, two Caribbean studies library collections will be profiled as they support research, teaching, and service to the community. Business meeting o f the ANSS section will follow the program. ACRL at the 1994 ALA Annual Conference /AC-5 S U N D A Y Learning from Afar: Th e Realities of Distance Education ACRL Professional Education Committee Sunday, June 26: 9:30 a.m.-12:30p.m. Widespread installation o f sophisticated communications technology has led to a rapid expansion o f distance learning programs. These programs, ranging from graduate classes in library science to continuing education, greatly increase the opportunities for staff development and professional recruitment. This session will offer a fresh perspective on the value o f telecourses and classes offered at remote sites, as well as an overview o f recent research on the effectiveness o f distance education. The topic will be o f concern to library managers, educators, and practitioners interested in alternative continuing education programs. Finding Out about the Former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe: Improvements in Customer Services ACRL Slavic and East European Section Sunday, June26: 2:00-4:00p.m. The SEES program will explore new trends in services to library users seeking information on Russia, the former Soviet Union, and Eastern Europe in the context o f political changes and concurrent advances in electronic communica­ tion. The three speakers will discuss respectively the demand and provision of information in business research, the availability and nature o f new reference works dealing with the region, and electronic information sources. Educating and Training Special Collections Librarians: The Network of Expectations and Opportunities ACRL Rare Books and Manuscripts Section and Society of American Archivists-American Library Association Joint Committee on Library-Archives Relationships Sunday, June 26: 2 :0 0- 5:30p.m. The 1994 RBMS Conference Program will explore the education and training of special collections librarians. Panelists will discuss the qualifications academic research libraries seek in special collections librarians at entry and advanced levels, how effective library schools are in developing those qualifications, and the availability and effectiveness o f alternative means o f education and training. AC-6/ C&RL News—May 1994 Scholarly Resources on the Internet: Beyond the Basics ACRL Science and Technology Section/Combined Monday, June 27: 9:00 a.m. - 5:00p.m. A group o f trained Internet users will provide demonstrations and hands-on laboratory experience in the use o f the Internet. Social sciences, humanities and science disciplines will be covered. Sessions will be repeated to allow conference attendees to participate in this program to the degree they wish without consuming large blocks o f program time. A series o f poster sessions will be available throughout the day on uses o f Internet resources. Coalition for Networked Information— Past, Present, and Future ACRL Research Committee and the ACRL University Libraries Section Monday, June 27: 9:30 a.m. - 12:30p.m. The Coalition for Networked Information (CNI) is an important mechanism by which libraries and librarians marshal their resources to cooperate with higher education and computing associations in the development o f the INTERNET and the services provided on it. Going Home Again: Return to the Roots ACRL International Relations Committee Monday, June 27: 9:30 a.m. - 12:30p.m. Three o f the panelists will discuss their programs and experiences in the East­ ern European countries from which they originally emigrated. The panelists will focus not only on their projects and accomplishments, but will discuss their impressions and emotions upon returning to their countries o f origin as they attempt to change from formerly totalitarian states to open societies. The fourth panelist spent a college semester in the formerly Communist Soviet Union, has travelled extensively in Russia, and was the first librarian from the Library o f Congress to officially travel to the Baltic region in over 60 years. The fifth panelist and moderator will briefly discuss his assignment in Bulgaria. ACRL Women’s Studies Section and ACRL Educational and Behavioral Sciences Section Monday, June 27: 9:30 a.m. - 12:30p.m. Effective networking relies on unobstructed communication, yet research has shown that gender differences may create communication barriers. What are these barriers? H ow do they influence information access and usage in academ­ ic libraries? Will gender-conscious networking facilitate barrier-free communi­ cation? Specialists in gender issues relating to communication as well as gender and electronic communication will address these and related questions. An open discussion will follow the presentations. Bringing Your Staff Up to Speed on the ‘Net’ ACRL Community and Junior College Libraries Section Monday, June 27: 2:00- 4:00p.m. Presenter and 3-member panel will provide practical information on training staff to utilize the Internet efficiently and effectively, both for patrons and for professional development. Several panelists will describe/demonstrate success­ ful staff training programs. Beyond the F1 Key: Thinking and Teaching the Internet within the Curriculum ACRL Bibliographic Instruction Section and ACRL College Libraries Section Monday, June 27: 2:00-5:30p.m. Critical thinking has direct and profound connections with learning outcome developments in college and university curriculums. By using the rich and varied environment o f the Internet to engender critical thinking abilities, we connect our library programs to the key movement in educational reform today. The combined program o f the ACRL Bibliographic Instruction Section and ACRL College Libraries Section will present two conceptual frameworks and several case studies related to Internet training and use in the academic library. Related poster sessions, co-sponsored by ACRL Science and Technology Section, will precede and follow the program.
