TARO is d e sig n ed to assist scholars a n d citizens across Texas in locating im portant archival m aterials re la tin g to th e h isto ry , c u ltu re , social, a n d e c o n o m ic c o n d itio n s o f th e state. A $580,000 grant will go toward continued support of preser­ vation field services a n d a $700,000 grant will support a cooperative preservation microfilming project. SOLINET is a nonprofit organization serv­ ing m ore than 2,300 libraries in 10 Southeastern states and the Caribbean. The Inform ation Institute of Syracuse at Syracuse U n iv e rsity ’s School o f In fo rm a ­ tio n Studies has b e e n a w a rd e d a $5 m illion, five-year co n tra ct from th e U.S. D e p artm en t of Education to o perate the departm ent’s Edu­ cation Digital Library Initiative. T he contract com bines the w o rk o f the institute’s G atew ay to E d u c a tio n a l M aterials a n d V irtual R efer­ ence D esk projects. A c q u i s i t i o n s A m erican n ovelist James Ellroy has d o n a te d a m ajor g ro u p o f re sea rc h m aterials fo r his lite ra ry a rc h iv e s at th e U n iversity o f South Carolina’s (USC) Thomas C ooper Library. Ellroy, author of 15 books, including The B lack D a h lia (1987), L.A. C o n fid e n tia l (1990) , and the m em o ir M y D a r k Places (1 9 9 6 ), se lec te d USC as the hom e for his literary papers in 1999. Since then, Ellroy has ad d ed a second group of p a p e rs a n d Richard Layman, a USC alum nus, has donated the autograph manuscripts for L A . Confidential and Ellroy’s novel White J a z z (1992). This sum m er, Ellroy m ade a third m ajor d o n a ­ tion: th e m anuscript a n d m ultiple typescripts fo r h is la te st n o v e l The C old S ix T h o u s a n d (2001); file c o p ie s o f his m agazine co n trib u ­ tio n s; m o re th a n 300 d iffe re n t e d itio n s , reprintings, and translations o f his books; and a larg e c o lle c tio n o f fram e d p o ste rs, p h o to ­ graphs, a nd o ther visual materials. Author and music historian Frank Driggs has d o n a te d his collection of oral histories to the Miller Nichols Library at th e U niversity o f M issouri-Kansas City. T he oral histories, c o n ­ d u c te d from 1956 to 1986, cap tu re the truths o f the developm ent of jazz as related by a host o f m usicians a n d b a n d le a d e rs w h o d e fin e d the tradition. T he collection includes oral his­ to rie s by A ndy Kirk, B u ste r Sm ith, G e n e Ramey, T h am o n H ayes, Je ss e Stone, a n d Ed Lewis; m any of them survive as the only know n record o f a m usician’s experiences a n d voice. T h e 375 o ra l h isto rie s, h o u s e d in th e M arr Sound Archives, have b een inventoried (http:// w w w .um kc.edu/lib/spec-col/driggs_inv.htm ) a n d are in the process of being preserved a nd m ade available for research and scholarship. The U niversity a t A lb a n y has been n a m e d th e official re p o s ito ry o f th e WAMC Radio station’s program s, new sletters, p h o to ­ g ra p h s, a n d o th e r archival m aterials. WAMC produces m ore nationally syndicated programs than any National Public Radio syndicate out­ side the h o m e station. T he WAMC collection consists o f m ore than 1,000 o p e n reel a n d cas­ sette tapes of original radio program m ing g o­ ing back to 1977. The collection includes m any pro g ram s p ro d u c e d in A lbany b ut h e a rd n a ­ tionally and internationally, including “The Best o f O u r K n ow ledge,” “T he B ook S how ,” “T he Capitol C o n n e ctio n ,” a n d “T he E nvironm ent S how .” A dditional recordings include special events, folk festivals, a n d c o v era g e for local a n d state political e v e n ts .
