ACRL News Issue (B) of College & Research Libraries 2 7 3 People P R O F I L E S S t u a h t A. S t i f f l e r has been appointed to the position of director of library services at Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa. Stiffler began his library career at the Enoch Pratt Free Library in Baltimore in 1958. Two years later he moved to Hiram College, where he was assistant and associate librarian. From 1968 to 1973 he was library director at Findlay (O hio) College. He moved to the library directorship at Behrend College, Pennsylvania State Uni versity (E r ie ) , in 1973. Stiffler received his bachelor of arts degree at Hiram College where he later returned and was instrumental in developing long-range collection planning and participated in a build ing program and then moved on to Findlay College to develop the collection, reorganize services, and introduce the Ohio College L i brary Center ( O C L C ) system. He sees the Cornell library as basically strong but requiring development o f both collections and services to improve its position among other prestigious colleges of the Associated Col leges of the Midwest Consortium. The college has a strong tradition of experimental, self directed, off-campus, and independent study and offers an innovative challenge to the orga nization of supporting library services. Closer cooperative programs with nearby Coe and other Iowa colleges also is an open possibility. Stiffler was chairperson, Nominating Com mittee for the Trustees Election, OCLC (1 9 7 2 ) ; was a board member of the Ohio L i brary Association, College and University Round Table ( 1 9 6 9 - 7 1 ) ; and has been chair person of the Northwest Interlibrary Coopera tive of Pennsylvania since 1975. He has published in the area of college library book selection and is presently a member of the Pennsylvania and the American Library associa tions. H a r R y R . S k a l l e r u p has been named di rector of libraries at Florida Atlantic Univer sity, Boca Raton. He comes to FA U from the U.S. Naval Academy library, where from 1969 to September 1977 he had been associate li brarian and also head of readers’ services, 1967-69. During this time Skallerup was active in all phases of the planning, furnishing, and the eventual operation of a new 225,000- square-foot library facility, the administrative reorganization and consolidation of the library, and the upgrading of the library’s collections. Prior to his association with the Naval Acade my, Skallerup was on the staff of the University of Iowa Libraries as chief of the catalog depart ment, 1 964-67, and head of the engineering library, 1962-64. Before that, he worked as an assistant manager at W alter J. Johnson, Inc., an international antiquarian book firm in New York City, and as science librarian at Southern Illinois University. His first full-time library position was physics librarian at the University of Illinois. Skallerup received his M.A. in library science from the University of Minnesota, where he held an H. W . Wilson scholarship, in 1954. He also previously earned degrees from the Univer sity of Illinois and Washington University, St. Louis. Skallerup is the author of B o o k s Afloat ir A shore (Archon, 1 9 7 4 ), a history of books, li braries, and reading in the early maritime en vironment; and he has contributed to several library, scientific, and scholarly publications, among them S cien ce, the Q uarterly Jo u rn al o f th e L ib rary o f Congress, and the second edition of B o o k s fo r C o lleg e L ib raries. He is a lifetime member of the American Library Association, A CRL, and is a member of the Bibliographical Society of America, the Federal Library and Information Network executive steering com mittee, Nautical Research Guild, Sigma Xi, and Beta Phi Mu. Since 1974, Ince has been assistant professor of library science and assistant director of tech nical services at the New Mexico State Univer sity Library, where he joined the faculty as an instructor in 1972. From 1 968-72, he was employed at the Uni versity of Texas Library at Austin. He was em ployed by the Gonzales, Texas, Independent School District as an English and speech teach er and a drama coach from 1965-68 and by the Riviera, Texas, Independent School District as a teacher of English, chemistry, and physics in 1964-65. A 1960 graduate of Gonzales High School, Ince received the B.A. degree from Texas A&I University in 1964 and the master of library science from the University of Texas at Austin in 1970. He has done further graduate work at Southwest Texas State University at San Mar cos. 27 4 He is a member of the American Library Association, the Southwestern Library Associa tion, and the New Mexico Library Association. Crosby Library, a gift to Gonzaga of alum nus Harry L. “Bing” Crosby, houses approxi mately 200,000 volumes, serving an academic community of about 3,500 students and faculty. In addition to its Crosbyana collection, includ ing gold records, Oscars, and other memorabilia of Bing Crosby, the library houses a notable collection of materials relating to the Jesuit poet Gerard Manly Hopkins. Other separate collections include the 30,000-volume Scholas- ticate Library as well as the archives of the Oregon Province of the Society of Jesus. The archives are particularly rich in materials relat ed to the Indians of the Pacific Northwest. J a m e s E . G a i n e s , J r . , has been appointed head librarian at Virginia Military Institute, Lexington, Virginia. A native of Georgia, Gaines has a B.A. in English, an M .L. from Emory University, and a Ph.D. from Florida State University. His professional background includes the following positions: assistant to the head of public services, University of Cincin nati, 1 9 6 4 -6 5 ; assistant librarian for technical services, Antioch College, 1 9 6 5 -6 8 ; and director of the library, Birmingham-Southern College, 1968-74. Gaines has several publications to his credit and holds a lifetime membership in ALA. Commenting on his appointment, Gaines said, “The position here is loaded with chal lenges— to make the most of the 1939 fortress of a building and its 1972 addition, to build a professional staff, to retool the library’s one- hour credit bibliography courses (offered since 1 9 6 1 ), and to establish appropriate services. There are exciting opportunities for interlibrary cooperation here, since Lexington is exception ally well endowed with academic and research libraries. Our campus adjoins Washington and L ee University, which has an extremely fine undergraduate collection and a law library. Al so, the George C. Marshall Research Library, privately supported and administered, is locat ed on our campus.” F r e d P e t e r s o n , associate chairman of the university’s Department of Library and Infor mation Science, has been appointed acting di rector of libraries at the Catholic University of America for one year. He succeeds Lloyd F . Wagner, director of libraries for the last ten years, who announced his resignation in July. Wagner came to the university in January 1967 from the position of chief of the Library Ser vices Division at the Federal Aviation Agency. A native of Dubuque, Iowa, he is a graduate of Lafayette College and holds a master’s degree in library science from Catholic University. Peterson holds bachelor’s and master’s de grees from the University of Minnesota and a doctorate from Indiana University. He was a member of the faculty of Iowa State University while serving in various administrative capaci ties in the library there from 1961 to 1970. He is a native of Minneapolis. A search committee will be appointed by Clarence C. Walton, president of The Catholic University of America, to nominate candidates for the position of director. Libraries at The Catholic University of America house collections numbering some one million volumes, the largest university collec tion in Washington, D.C. 275 J o a n n e R. E u s t e r assumed on July 1 the position of library director at Loyola University, New Orleans, succeeding James G. Volney, li brary director since 1966. Volney has moved to a new posi tion as director of the library at Centenary College, Shreveport, Louisiana. Euster re ceived her M.L.S. de gree from the School of Librarianship, Uni versity of Washing ton, Seattle, and has been at Edmonds Community College, Washington, since Joan n e R. Euster 1968, where she was most recently director of the library-media cen ter. She received the M.B.A. degree in Opera tions and Systems Analysis from the University of Washington in 1977. Active in organization and operation of the (Washington) Community College Library Cooperative since 1972, Euster further studied interlibrary cooperation for her M.B.A. thesis, titled Community C o lleg e L i brary C ooperation: A B ehavioral and Dynamic M odel. In 1973 she served as coordinator for a model library project sponsored by the Mexican government on behalf of an agricultural coop erative in the Mexican state of Nayarit. Recent activities include work in cable television, serv ing as producer and host for live local tele vision coverage. A P P O I N T M E N T S F a w z i A .
