Washington, D.C. 20037 c r ns 26 0 E 1973-74 DITION JUST OFF THE PRESS! “A basic reference tool. All libraries should have it.” -RQ* ENCYCLOPEDIA OF ASSOCIATIONS The Encyclopedia of Associations has tradi tionally been consulted firs t by librarians and researchers looking for sources of cur rent, authoritative information, which asso ciations are uniquely equipped to provide on thousands of subjects. The new, Eighth Edition includes some 25,000 changes and 1,224 new listings. Nearly 12,000 of the 17,886 entries are fu ll descriptions of ac tive associations; others are listings for inactive or defunct groups, pseudo-organi zations, etc. *ln the Spring, 1973 issue of RQ, the pre vious edition of the Encyclopedia of Associ ations was described and appraised: “ D uring the sixteen years since its introduc tion in 1956, the E n c y c lo p e d ia o f A s so cia tio n s has earned its reputation as a cornerstone o f any sound general reference collection … “ Volum e 1, the basic volume and the one which all libraries should have if the cost o f all three is overwhelming, is a classified listing of, prim arily, nonprofit mem bership organi zations o f the U nited States. B u t included as well are selected nonm em bership groups, com mercial groups, foreign organizations o f in terest in this country, international associa tions with large U .S . m em berships, local A m erican organizations o f national interest and im portance, and numerous ad hoc citizen groups and projects. T he inform ation about each association is expressed, usually, in seventeen categories. Included are nam e, ad dress, num ber o f m em bers, purposes, p u blica tions, ch ief executive, and phone num ber if supplied by the association. In each o f the classified sections, such as Edu cational and Cultural O rganizations, the associations ap pear in alphabetical order by the principal keyword (underlined) in the title. Section 19— Inactive, D efu n ct or Foreign N am es— is the exception to this convenience. However, quick access is provided to any organization through the general alphabetical /keyword index. “ Volum e 2 provides two additional points o f access to the associations com prising V o l ume 1. T h e G eographic section lists by state and city the names, addresses, phone numbers (if supplied), and executives o f the organizations. T he Executive section lists by surname the executives cited in Volum e 1, together with appropriate association, title, and address … “ Volum e 3 … is especially im portant in an age o f proliferating ideas, problem s, and grievances, around which people cluster in organizations to decide upon courses o f action and methods o f redress. ‘New A ssociations and P ro je c ts ,’ or N A P , thus supplements inform ation in Volum e 1 by listing in the sam e form at and with the same detail all new associations called to the attention o f the p u b lis h e r b etw een e d itio n s o f th e b a s ic volume … “ In a word, the E n c y c lo p e d ia o f A s so cia tio n s is a basic reference to o l. All libraries should have it. It can be very useful, to o , in the area o f technical services, giving acquisitions de partm ents current inform ation on publications and m ailing addresses o f associations. C a ta loging departm ents may find both the existence and the form o f a particular association help ful in determ ining the form o f entry o f corp o rate bodies …” T H E E N C Y C L O P E D IA O F A S S O C IA T IO N S IS A V A IL A B L E ON 3 0 -D A Y A P P R O V A L Vol. 1, N ational O rg a n iz a tio n s of the U nited S ta te s (1 5 4 6 p p .), $ 4 5 .0 0 Vol. 2 , G e o g ra p h ic -E x e c u tiv e I n d e x (5 1 2 p p .), $ 2 8 .5 0 Vol. 3 , New A s s o c ia tio n s and P ro je c ts .
