E v a n s , Librarian of Congress from 1945 to 1953, died on D e c e m b e r 23 in San Antonio, w here h e has lived since 1977. Following his service at LC, Evans was director-general of th e U n ited N ations E d u catio n al, Scientific and C u ltu ral O rganization (U N ESC O ) from 1953 to 1958. In 1962 he was nam ed director of in te rn a ­ tional and legal collections for th e library at C o­ lum bia University. H e later becam e chairm an of the Association for th e W orld University. Evans’ first position at th e Library of Congress in 1939 was as d irecto r of the Legislative Refer­ ence (now Congressional Research) Service. This follow ed sev eral years of tea c h in g at Stanford, Princeton, and D artm outh and service as director of the H istorical Records Survey, which resu lted in th e publication of m any guides and o th er his­ torical m aterials in th e 1930s. Evans earn ed a m aster’s d eg ree in economics from th e U niversity of Texas. H e was aw arded a doctorate by Stanford U niversity and w rote his dissertation on “T he M andates System and th e A dm inistration of T erritories u n d e r C M an d ate,’’ a reflection of his early in te re st in international affairs. M a r i a n B . M y e r s who re tire d in 1962 as head of the Book Section in the C opyright Cataloging Division of th e Library of Congress, died on Oc­ to b er 1 in Bethesda. ■ ■
