The Rhode Island School o f Design (RISD) receiv ed a $100,000 g ran t from the Cham plin Foundation in su p p o rt of the im ple­ m entation o f an integrated online public ac­ cess catalog for RISD’s library. The Cham plin F oundation’s grant will enable RISD’s inform a­ tion resources to becom e accessible to a state­ w ide netw ork. T h e S t a n f o r d U n i v e r s it y L ib r a r ie s received a $17,500 grant from the Social Sci­ ence Research Council and the American Coun­ cil o f Learned Societies to catalog Russian-lan­ g u a g e m aterials o n th e occult, th e o s o p h y , Eastern religions, and related topics. The col­ lection o n the occult an d related topics, part of the Jo h n M. Constantinoff Collection d o nated to th e libraries in 1987, consists o f ap p ro x i­ m ately 800 titles and is u n iq u e in the United States. The catalog records will b e available in Stanford’s local online catalogs an d eventually in RLIN an d OCLC. The Egan Library a t th e U niversity o f A lask a S ou th east (UAS) in Ju n eau will receive half o f an $893,074 b eq u est m ade to the uni­ versity in D ecem ber, according to the terms d e s ig n a te d b y th e e s ta te o f V erna H u rley Carrigan. H alf o f th e b eq u est will b e u se d for the purchase of books, equipm ent, an d facili­ ties for the library. The o th er half o f th e b e­ q u est will constitute an e n d o w m en t for schol­ arships for students from southeast Alaska. The L ib ra ry a t the U niv e rs ity o f C ali­ fo rn ia , B erk eley, received over $250,000 from the U. S. D epartm ent o f E ducation’s Title IIC program for preservation and bibliographic con­ trol of the C. H art Merriam Collection. C. Hart Merriam, trained as a naturalist, collected m uch inform ation im portant to th e history o f native Americans, particularly in California an d the w e ste rn states. The co llectio n is especially strong in ethnogeography, including original un ­ published manuscripts, tribal b oundary an d vil­ lage site m aps, vocabularies, photographs, and lists o f place nam es. T he project aw ard will enable th e library to create preservation copies o f ph otographs an d m anuscripts a n d m ake the collection m ore accessible. The U niversity o f M ichigan (U M ) Library has received a tw o-year Title IIC grant from the U.S. D epartm ent of Education to catalog 5,500 retrospective serial titles from the Labadie Collection o f radical protest and reform litera­ tures. T he Labadie Collection docum ents a w ide variety o f social protest m ovem ents an d orga­ nizations o f th e 19th an d 20th centuries, in­ cluding substantial holdings in the civil rights, student protest, an d anti-w ar m ovem ents o f the 1960s, m odern anarchist an d Trotskyist litera­ ture, and m aterials on gay liberation, radical fem inism , pacifism , am nesty, a n d the a n ti­ nuclear m ovem ents. The project will enable the library to create full CONSER-level cataloging records (available through the online catalogs OCLC, RLIN, and the UM’s MIRLYN) for Labadie serials that have never b e e n cataloged. The grant provides $78,600 for th e first year o f the project. The U niversity o f Southern C alifo rn ia has received a $1 million grant from the Jam es Irvine F oundation for the Jam es Irvine F oun­ dation C enter for Scholarly Technology.
