Cr: Horst Schwassmann Amazon library expanding its database services N orth B razil’s Museu G oeldi, long the region’s leading research facility, recently began an am b i­ tious expansion of lib rary and inform ation services. L ocated in the p o rt city of Belém do P ará at the m o u th of th e A m azon R iver, th e m useum was founded in 1866 and recruits an in tern atio n al staff to its research program s in the physical and h um an sciences. T he G oeldi’s lib rary was designated the official depository of the Am azon P act nations, fol­ low ing th e signing of the T reaty for A m azonian C ooperation in 1978 by Brazil an d its Basin neigh­ bors, Bolivia, Peru, E cuador, C olom bia, V enezu­ ela, and the G uianas. Now th e Goeldi is em barking on a program of a u to m a tio n w ith th e c reatio n of In fo rm A m — a bibliographic system th a t will provide online ac­ cess to the m useum ’s rapidly grow ing collection. T he system is up and has some 10,000 entries al­ ready. In 1984 the University of F lo rid a’s Am azon Re­ search and T rain in g Program (ARTP) entered into an agreem ent w ith th e Museu Goeldi for institu­ tional cooperation and plans to place lib rary and inform ation services as a priority item in its work. ARTP is now com piling a bibliographic database of Am azon River Valley m aterials held by the U ni­ versity of F lorida L ibraries and m ay som eday link this w ith the G oeldi’s Inform A m system . In the m eantim e, the Museu Goeldi has begun an extensive acquisitions effort to enhance its exist­ ing collections.
