ACRL News Issue (B) of College & Research Libraries 306 People PROFILE C a s p e r L. J o r d a n , associate professor of li brary service at Atlanta University School o f Li brary Service, has been named university librar ian at Atlanta Univer sity effective 1 Sep tember 1974. He suc ceeds Mrs. Gaynelle W . Barksdale, who re tired after a thirty- nine-year association with Atlanta Univer sity. Mr. Jordan s first li brary position was at W ilberforce Universi ty in Ohio where he served as chief librar Casper L. Jordan ian. In 1961 he was supervisor of tech nical services for the Nioga Library System, a three-county public library system with head quarters in Niagara Falls, New York. In 1968 he was promoted to assistant director of the system. In 1969 Mr. Jordan accepted an assist ant professorship in Atlanta University School of Library Service and was promoted to an as sociate professorship in 1973. Mr. Jordan has participated in a number of research projects: he performed the feasibility study which culminated in the Cooperative Col lege Library Center in Atlanta; was state co ordinator of the African-American Materials Project, a six-state project to locate and iden tify materials relative to the black experience; and was chief investigator of a survey o f the East St. Louis (Illinois) Public Library. Under two foundation grants Mr. Jordan has coordi nated programs to upgrade managerial skills of librarians employed in predominantly black academic libraries: Ford Foundation Special Purpose Program (1 9 6 9 -71 ) and a current M ellon-ACRL Intern Project. He has authored a number of studies and is a contributor to professional journals. He is ac tive in a number of metropolitan, state, region al, and national associations. In 1950 Jordan founded Free Lance, a magazine of poetry and prose, which is considered the oldest black lit erary magazine still in existence. A native of Cleveland, Ohio, Jordan received an A.B. degree in history from Case Western Reserve and holds an M.S. in L.S. from Atlan ta University. A P P O I N T M E N T S C h e r y l L.
