T he n e w  p r e s id e n t o f th e  A m erican Asso­
c ia tio n  o f U n iv e rsity  P ro fe s so rs (AAUP) is 
M artha F rie d m a n , associate professor and his­
tory a n d  philosophy lib ra rian  at th e  U niversity 
of Illinois, U rbana. She has b e e n  a m e m b e r of 
th e  univ ersity  faculty since 1965 w ith h e r  p a r­
ticu lar a re a  o f resea rch  b ein g  th e  history of 
A m e r ic a n  a c a d e m ic  l i b r a r i e s  a n d  t h e  d e ­
v elo p m en t of ideas o f professionalism  in lib ra r­
ianship. F rie d m a n  has se rv e d  on th e  Faculty 
S en ate a t th e  U n iv ersity  of Illinois a n d  has 
b e e n  th e  ch airp erso n  o f  th e  S en ate C ouncil 
since 1976. S he has also b e e n  a m e m b e r o f
