T he clearinghouse w as d eveloped by MSU’s Mark McCullough, govern­ m ent d o c u m e n ts /m a p s li­ brarian; M ary N ere, g o v ­ e rn m e n t d o c u m e n ts tech ­ nician; a n d P am Schmutz, re fe re n ce librarian. T h e c le a rin g h o u se is p a n o f a larger tutorial o n g o v e rn m e n t d o c u m e n ts d isp la y s, w h ic h is s u p ­ p o rte d b y a n a w ard from th e ALA GODORT Continuing E ducation Com ­ mittee. T h e clearin g h o u se features im ages, d e ­ scriptions, a n d biblio g rap h ies o f g o v e rn m e n t d o c u m e n ts d is p la y s c r e a te d b y lib ra rie s th ro u g h o u t th e U nited States. Since its un v eil­ ing in April 2000, th e c learin g h o u se h as re­ ceiv ed m o re th a n 40 su bm issions from 18 li­ braries, in clu d in g several virtual displays. T h e c le a rin g h o u s e d isp lay s v a ry from th e sim p le ta b le to p variety to e la b o ra te e x h ib ­ its. D isp la y titles inclu d e: “T en Years o f Im ­ ages: T h e H u b b le S p ace T e le s c o p e ,” “N a­ tional Library W eek ,” “H istory o f th e In te rn e t,” a n d “B io tech n o lo g y : T h e G en etics R evolu­ tio n .” T h e im ag es a n d b ib lio g ra p h ie s are in te n d e d to m a k e it e a sie r a n d less tim e -c o n ­ su m in g fo r lib rary staff as th e y a sse m b le d is­ play s in th e ir o w n libraries. In ste a d o f traveling to o th e r libraries, li­ brary staff c a n visit th e o n lin e clearin g h o u se to g a th e r creative ideas. W hile m o st su b m issio n s h a v e c o m e from U.S. federal d ep o sito ry libraries, th e clearing­ h o u s e c re a to rs w o u ld lik e to e x p a n d th e project b y w elcom ing p ro ­ m o tio n al displays th at e x ­ hibit state, local, a n d in­ te r n a tio n a l g o v e r n m e n t d o cu m en ts. T h ey are e s­ pecially in te re ste d in re ­ ceiv in g d isp lay s from li­ braries o u tsid e th e U nited States. A ny lib ra ry th a t h a s c re a te d p ro m o tio n a l dis­ plays in co rp o ratin g g o v e rn m e n t inform ation (tax form s, to p o g ra p h ic m ap s, etc.) is invited to subm it its display to th e clearin g h o u se. T h e displays d o n o t n e e d to in clu d e on ly g o v e rn ­ m e n t d o c u m e n ts, b u t th e y s h o u ld in c lu d e som e. D isplays are typically p o s te d o n th e c learin g h o u se W eb site w ith in tw o w e e k s o f subm ission, an d contributors’ nam es are ad d e d to th e clearinghouse.
