In 1967, V e a n e r was a w a rd e d an N S F overseas travel g ran t, a n d in 1972 h e was se le c te d as a fel­ low o f th e C ouncil on L ib rary Resources. H e was in stru m en tal in o b ta in in g g ra n ts from th e Office o f E d u c a tio n to s ta rt— a n d C L R /N E H g ra n ts to c o n tin u e — S ta n fo rd ’s B A LLO TS p ro je c t, now a successful ongo in g c o m p u te r netw ork. His m ajor professional goal is to apply m odern tech n o lo g y to th e lib ra ry w h ile su p p o rtin g a n d e n h an cin g th e p rin cip le s o f h u m a n e a d m in istra ­ tio n a n d i n t e r i n s t i t u t i o n a l c o o p e r a t i o n . H e foresees vast n e a r-te rm c h an g es in th e technology o f in fo rm a tio n g e n e ra tio n a n d d is tr ib u tio n an d seeks to m ain tain th e p rim a c y o f th e lib ra ry as th e m a jo r fa cility fo r sto rin g , o rg a n iz in g , a n d 114 sw itching inform ation and publications. Long an advocate o f careful a d h e re n c e to strict standards in lib ra ry m icro g rap h ics a n d c o m p u te r a p p lic a ­ tio n s, h e m a in ta in s a d e e p c o n c e rn a b o u t th e p e rm an en ce of m icroform s and o th e r m edia and th e co n tin u in g in teg rity o f m achine-readable d ata bases. At Santa B arbara, V ean e r will ad m in ister a staff of 264 F T E and a collection o f 1.2 million vol­ u m e s a n d 18,000 se ria ls. T h e lib ra ry h as j u s t co m p leted a new add itio n to its central facility, w hich now en c o m p a sse s a p p ro x im ately 250,000 sq u a re feet o f space in c o n n e c te d b u ild in g s of two, eig h t, and four stories. UCSB is a m em b e r of th e Association of R esearch L ib raries and th e C e n te r for R esearch L ib raries. T h e u n iv e rsity ’s e n ro llm e n t is 14,000. • Ba r b a r a A.
