The Canadian Institute for Historical M icroreproductions (CIHM) h as b e e n aw a rd e d a g ran t o f $500,000 from th e A ndrew W. M ellon F o u n d atio n for a digital p roject th at will allow access o n th e In tern et to early w o rk s o f C ana­ d ian literature, native studies, an d w o m e n ’s his­ tory. T h e project will digitize 5,000 w o rk s from CIHM’s m icrofiche collection o f C anadian w orks for In tern et access, d e v e lo p a m o d el for com ­ p arin g th e costs o f sto rin g a n d accessing w o rk s in b o th traditional m edia a n d digital form at, a n d evaluate th e u se a n d acceptability o f vari­ o u s digital versions c o m p a re d w ith p rin te d an d m icroform versions o f texts. The Claremont Colleges Libraries have received a $1 million grant from the W. M. Keck F o u n d atio n to su p p o rt innovative m e th o d s for librarians to w o rk w ith users to e n h an ce teach­ ing an d learning. A W. M. Keck Learning Room will b e established w h ere students a n d faculty will receive h ands-on instruction in th e u se o f inform ation technology. A “virtual reserve ro o m ” will also b e d ev e lo p e d o n th e library’s W eb site. Georgetown University's Joseph M ark Lauinger Memorial Library has been aw arded a $1 million endow m ent to support and provide access to the Leon Robbin Collection o f Music Manuscripts an d Letters o f Composers. The Robbin Collection includes scores by the 16th-century liturgical com­ p o s e r P alestrina a n d co m p o s e rs Rossini a n d Donizetti, as well as manuscripts and letters from s u c h c o m p o s e r s a s S c h u b e rt, B e e th o v e n , M endelsohn, W a g n e r, a n d others. The North Carolina State U niversity (NCSU) Libraries h as receiv ed a $15,000 g ran t from th e Lucius N. Littauer F o u n d atio n o f N ew Y ork to fo u n d th e Lucius N. Littauer Ju d aica B ook Fund. T he e n ­ d o w m e n t will p ro d u c e in ­ co m e for th e acq u isitio n of Ju d aica a n d H ebraica m ate­ rials in all fo rm ats fo r th e NCSU Libraries’ L aw rence S. R udner H o lo cau st M em orial C ollection. It will also su p p o rt an English co u rse o n “Literature o f th e H o lo cau st,” first ta u g h t at th e university by Rudner. The University of Minnesota Libraries has been awarded a $350,000 three-year grant by the Bush Foundation o f St. Paul, Minnesota, to de­ velop and implement a comprehensive program of library and information services to distance learn­ ers. The libraries will develop a suite o f services for rem ote users that includes netw orked instruction on the use o f information resources, access to elec­ tronic reference and full-text materials, docum ent delivery, reference service, and technical assistance. Wayne State University's Shiffman Medi­ cal Library has b een aw arded a grant o f $7,500 from the National Institute o f Environmental Health Sci­ ences’ Center for Molecular an d Cellular Toxicol­ ogy with H um an Applications. The aw ard will be used to launch a pilot training program for clini­ cians in the use o f toxicology databases accessible through Grateful Med, an information system pro­ duced by the National Library of Medicine. T h e c o lle c tio n w a s a m a s s e d b y M ichael J. Ciaraldi, a n in d e p e n d e n t c o m p u te r co n su ltan t an d com ic art enthusiast. T h e en tire collection is estim ated to co n tain 60,000 items. A Samuel Beckett manuscript notebook dating from the early 1950s has b een acquired by the Ohio State University Libraries’ Division o f Rare Books and Manuscripts. The notebook contains Beckett’s manuscript draft for Fin de Partie, differ­ ing markedly from the published text; a complete early draft o f From a n A b a n d o n ed Work, an early draft o f an untitled short story in French; an aborted attempt by Beckett to translate his Molloy from French into English; and a brief unpublished fragment from E n A tt e n d a n t Godot.
