They are also o f great c oncern to m iddle a nd high school teachers a n d administrators, a n d fac­ ulty a n d adm inistrators in colleges a n d universi­ ties. Librarians h a v e also e m b ra c e d th e issue of plagiarism a n d re aliz e d th e im p o rta n ce o f link­ ing it to th e p ro p e r d o c u m e n tatio n o f so u rces to te a c h u se rs a b o u t th e im p o rta n c e o f k n o w in g a b o u t fair use, plagiarism, a n d docum entation. Plagiarism has b e e n a ro u n d for centuries, b ut the Internet a n d th e s u b s e q u e n t proliferation o f inform ation a n d technology have m ad e ram pant w h a t w as previously d o n e in secret. P eople in all w a lk s o f life plag ia riz e, it is n o t lim ited to s tu ­ dents. T he O xford English D ictionary O nline (OED O nline) defines plagiarism as “the action o r prac­ tice o f plagiarizing; th e w rongful a p p ro p ria tio n o r purloining, a n d pub lic a tio n as o n e ’s o w n, o f th e ideas, o r the e xpression o f the ideas (literary, artistic, m usical, m echanical, etc.) o f a n o th e r.1 In plain language, plagiarism is taking so m e ­ o n e e ls e ’s w o rk a n d p a ssin g it o ff as o n e ’s o w n w ithout p ro p e r acknow ledgm ent o r d o cum enta­ tion. Plagiarism is also a m oral, ethical, a n d legal issue.
