T h e g ra n t w ill b e u s e d to p r e s e r v e 2 0 0 ,0 0 0 f e e t o f e a r l y s o u n d M o v i e to n e N e w s f ilm fro m n i tr o c e l l u lo s e film t o 3 5 m m s a f e ty film . T h e p ro je c t, w h i c h is p a r t o f th e N E H “H is to r y o f T alk in g P ic tu re s,” w ill p re s e rv e a p p ro x im a te ly 225 e d i t e d n e w s r e e l s t o r i e s a n d a s s o c i a t e d o u t ta k e s , t o g e t h e r w ith s u p p l e m e n t a l p a p e r d o c u m e n t s fro m th e first tw o y e a rs o f s o u n d - on-film n e w s re e l p ro d u c tio n . In a d d itio n to th e N E H f u n d s , t h e film lib r a r y w ill c o n t r i b u t e $101,269 in salaries, su p p lies, a n d in direct costs, a n d U SC ’s o ffic e o f r e s e a r c h w ill p r o v i d e a n a d d itio n a l $150,000. Johns H opkins U n iv e rs ity has re ce iv ed a g ra n t o f $150,500 fro m th e N a tio n a l E n d o w ­ m en t for th e H um anities to p re serv e a collection o f m o re th a n 300 e d u c a tio n a l television sh o w s p ro d u c e d b y J o h n s H o p k in s b e tw e e n 1948 a n d I960. T he collection includes four series: The Johns Hopkins Science Review, Tomorrow, Tomorrow’s Ca­ reers, a n d j o h n s H opkins File 7. All w e re recorded o n k in e s c o p e s , 16 m m film s th a t re c o rd e d th e sh o w , as it w a s b ro a d ca st, directly from a c a th ­ ode-ray monitor.
