ACRL News Issue (B) of College & Research Libraries C & R L N e w s ■ O c t o b e r 2 0 0 3 / 5 99 C o l l e g e & R e s e a r c h L i b r a r i e s news Volunteer to serve on a division or section committee A CRL division and section committee volun teers are an integral part o f the association and drive our success. Committee members help shape the organization by implementing its strate gic plan (available at http://www.acrl.org, click o n “A bout ACRL,” th en “W hat is ACRL?”), re shaping the association, and influencing the direc tion o f academic and research librarianship. If you have been looking for a way to becom e more involved with ACRL and w eren’t sure what steps to take, consider volunteering for a division o r section com m ittee. V ice president Frances Maloy invites all ACRL m em bers to contact the Appointments Committee about serving on one o f ACRL’s 23 committees for next year. Members m ay also contact on e o f the section vice chairs regarding service on one o f the many section com mittees. The benefits o f v o lu n te e rin g Volunteers not only give to the association, they get b ack from the association. As an ACRL divi sion or section committee member, you will: • build ties with academic and research librar ians around the country, • enhance your leadership abilities through con sensus building and persuasion, • share your expertise with colleagues, and • gain additional expertise by learning more about a n ew area o f academ ic librarianship or picking up new ideas for your current area. Th e a p p o in tm e n t process Appointments are made at both the section and division levels. T h e ACRL vice president is re sponsible for the committee appointments at the division level for th e y ear h e o r sh e serves as president. Likewise, section vice chairs are re sponsible for com m ittee appointm ents in their respective sections the year they serve as chair. Committee slates are usually com pleted shortly after the Midwinter M eeting during the year in which the individual serves as president-elect or chair-elect. T h e ACRL Appointments Commit tee assists the president-elect in this process in an advisory capacity. Factors influ en cin g a p p o in tm e n t Although the emphasis in the appointment pro cess may vary from year to year according to the prerogatives o f the president-elect and section chairs, the same factors are considered. They in clude: • E v id e n ce o f p o te n tia l c o m m itte e m e m b e r’s in terest. Have you attended the meetings and introduced yourself to the chair? D o you have previous experience that relates to the work o f the committee? Have you indicated your interest on the volunteer form? • D em ograp h ics an d co m p o sitio n o f com m ittee. A balance is sought with respect to type o f library (com m unity college, college, or university), geographic representation, ethnic di versity, and gender. Those who have not had the opportunity to serve o n an ACRL committee are encouraged to volunteer. • T he re co m m e n d a tio n o f th e cu rre n t com m ittee ch air. Current committee chairs are asked to suggest potential members. Although all o f these factors are considered, the final appoint ments are the prerogative o f the ACRL president elect and the section chair-elects. H o w to a p p ly 1. (Ed. note: The handbook will be available online in mid- October, with a print edition mailed to members who have requested it.) Attend the committee’s meetings at the Midwinter Meeting and Annual Conference to help you decide if those are the activities that interest you. 2. Submit a volu n teer form . C om plete th e v o lu n teer fo rm in cluded w ith this article. (Ed. n ote: This form is also available on ACRL’s Web site, go to www.acrl.org and select “Forms’’ from the Quicklinks drop down menu.) Be sure to cover all of the items asked for in the background information section of the form. If you have attended committee meet ings or programs, mention that. Fill out one form for ACRL division committees and a dif ferent form for each ACRL section committee you volunteer to serve on. Send the ACRL committee volunteer form to Linda Brown at the address on the bottom of the volunteer form; send the section volunteer forms to the appropriate section chair-elects (see list of addresses below). 3. In trod u ce yourself. Talk with com mittee members. Express your interest to the com mittee chair. Explain how you might contribute to the work of the committee. 4 . Volunteer again … and again. If you are not successful in being appointed one year, volunteer again the next year . . . and the next. Remember that a multitude of factors—num ber of appointments made, number of volun teers for each committee, number of volunteers from your type of library or your geographic area— determine the actual appointment, and these factors change from year to year.
