Mae M c Kernan, catalo g er in th e U niversity of Nebraska a t O m a h a L ib ra ry for 22 years, died in April a fte r a sh o rt illness. M cK ern an re tire d in 1987 after a distinguished career as special collec­ tions an d m onographs cataloger. She guided th e Technical Services D e p a rtm e n t th ro u g h th re e c a t­ aloging codes, O C L C , a n d D a ta p h a s e in s ta lla ­ tions. She beg an th e catalo g in g of th e A fghanistan Collection an d served as actin g h e ad of th e T ech n i­ cal Services D e p a rtm e n t from 1974 to 1979. M c­ Kernan received h er b ach elo r’s degree from th e University of N ebraska a t O m a h a in 1962 a n d her MLS from th e U niversity of D enver in 1963. Robert A. Mil l e r , professor em eritus a n d re­ tired d irecto r o f In d ia n a U niversity L ib raries, died in M arch. D u rin g a 30-year career as d irecto r of li­ braries, M iller oversaw th e b u ild in g of th e L illy L i­ brary an d th e M ain L ib ra ry on th e B loom ington campus, a n d c o o rd in a te d th e lib r a ry system on each of th e eight cam puses. H e re tire d in 1972 an d c o n tin u e d te a c h in g u n til 1973. M iller received b ach elo r’s degrees from th e U niversity of Io w a a n d C o lu m b ia U niversity, a n d a P h .D . from th e U ni­ v ersity o f C h icag o . H e served as d ire c to r of li­ braries a t th e U niversity o f N ebraska from 1936 to 1942. D orothy M . Schu llian, th e first c u ra to r of th e C ornell U niversity L ib ra ry ’s H istory a n d Science C ollections, died in A pril a fte r a n extended illness. Schullian first w en t to Ith a c a in 1927 w h en , a fter receiving h e r b ach elo r’s degree from W estern Re­ serve U niversity, she w as considering C ornell for g ra d u a te stu d y . C h icag o w as m o re persuasive, h o w ever, a n d Schullian subsequently received her P h .D . in L a tin from th e U niversity of C hicago in 1931. A fter th re e years as a F ellow of th e A m erican A cadem y in R om e, she ta u g h t an cien t languages for five years a t Albion College. In 1944 she re ­ tu rn e d to C leveland a n d b eg an an 18-year associa­ tio n w ith th e N atio n al L ib ra ry of M edicine, b egin­ n in g as a n a s s is ta n t c u r a t o r a n d e v e n t u a l l y becom ing chief of th e H istory of M edicine D ivi­ sion. Schullian w as lu re d to Ith a c a in 1961 to w ork w ith th e la te H o w ard A delm ann. O ver th e next 11 years she guided C ornell’s second ra re book d e p a r t­ m e n t from th e 4,500 volum es in th e A d elm ann C ol­ lection in 1961 to th e 25,000 volum es it co n tain ed in 1972, w h en Schullian retired . W orking on h e r o w n tim e , Schullian ed ited for 33 years th e “Notes an d E vents” section o f th e Jour­ nal o f th e H istory o f M edicine an d A llied Sciences.
