Expenditures for the 118 ARL m em ber libraries totaled over $1.4 billion during the past fiscal year, and the collections of m em ber libraries contain over 321 million volumes, accord­ ing to the 1985-86 report. Expenditures for the 106 university libraries in ARL topped $1 billion for the first tim e in 1986, w ith their collections num bering almost 275 million volumes (the rem ainder is ac­ counted for by the L ibrary of Congress and other non-academ ic research libraries). In this volume the figures for expenditures for library m aterials and for salaries and wages have been disaggregated in order to collect more com parable data. Libraries were asked to report figures for m aterials expendi­ tures in four individual categories: monographs, current serials, other (e.g., AV m aterials, microp- forms), and miscellaneous (e.g., bibliographic util­ ities) . Salary and wage figures are reported for pro­ fessionals, nonprofessionals, and student assistants. Sch- reyer (221 pages, May 1987), is an introduction to the range of inquiry encompassed by the field of book history and to the diverse type of resources that can support studies in this field. Its scope is limited to the Western printed book and its ar­ rangement follows the organization of the Library of Congress along the lines of custodial units. This illustrated volume has an extensive index and con­ tains hundreds of references to articles, pamphlets, and books that describe the L ibrary’s collections.
