Re-elected to the board for three-year terms are chair Paul Mosher, vice­ provost and director o f li braries at the University o f Pennsylvania, and David Stam, university librarian at Syracuse University. Jim Cole, principal serials cataloger at Iowa State University, has been named editor o f the quarterly journal the Serials Librarian, pub­ lished by Haworth Press. Cole is the author o f several papers on the subject and coeditor o f Notes Worth Noting: Notes Used in AACR2 Seri­ als Cataloging (1984), Serials Cataloging: The State o f the Art (1987), and Serials Cataloging: Modem Perspectives and International Devel­ opments (1992). Appointments Nicholas C. Burckel is now director o f librar­ ies at Marquette University in Milwaukee. Burckel had served as associate dean for Wash­ ington University Librar­ ies in St. Louis since 1986, and as adjunct as­ sociate professor in the School o f Library and In­ formation Science at the University o f Missouri- Columbia since 1987. An active member o f ALA and ACRL, he is currently Nicholas Burckel vic e -p re s id e n t/ p re s i dent-elect o f the Society o f American Archi­ vists. Jerry Dean Campbell has been appointed uni­ versity librarian and dean o f University Librar­ ies at the U n iversity o f Southern California, Los An­ geles, effective January 1, 1996. Since 1985 Campbell has served as vice-provost for library affairs, university librarian, and professor o f the practice o f theological bibliography at Duke Uni­ versity. Concurrently, from 1989 to 1994, he was Duke’s vice-provost for computing. In the early 1980s Campbell directed the Bridwell Library at Southern M eth od ist U n iv e rs ity ’ s P erk in s School o f Theology. In the 1970s he was direc­ tor o f the Ira J. Taylor Library at the Iliff School o f Theology in Denver. Jerry Dean Campbell Paul Frisch is now head librarian o f the U. Grant Miller Library at Washington and Jeffer­ son College in Washing­ ton, Pennsylvania. Frisch most recently served as head o f reference at the University o f Illinois at Chicago’s Main Library. Before that he served as head o f re fe re n c e at Southwest Missouri State University and social sci­ ences librarian at Trinity University. Joy Collins has been named director o f librar­ ies at Iona College in N ew Rochelle, N ew York. Collins recently served as acting dean o f the library at Drexel University, where she also headed information services. Commenting on the appointment, Br. James A. Ligouri, presi­ dent o f Iona, said, “[Joy] has w o rk ed to November 1995/727 strengthen her talents and skills, and has a tre­ mendous amount to offer the Iona community.” Scott E. Kennedy is now director o f the Jer­ emy Richard Library at the University o f Con­ necticut Stamford campus. Michael Knecht has been appointed director of library services at Henderson Community Col­ lege in Henderson, Kentucky. Lorin Lindsay, director o f library services at the University o f Texas at the Permian Basin, has been named director o f the library at Peru State College (PSC) in Nebraska. Lindsay has been a librarian since 1967, serving in positions at public libraries (1967– 70), at Kansas State Uni­ versity (1970– 72), and at Oral Roberts University (1974– 86). Commenting on the appointment, PSC Lorin Lindsay president Robert L. Bums said, “Mr. Lindsay brings to PSC the talent and dedication w e have needed to make our library the center o f the campus.” Deborah C. Masters is the new university li­ brarian at San Francisco State University. Mas­ ters has served as interim university librarian and assistant university librarian at George Washington University. During the past year she was on leave to be visiting program officer for the Coalition for Networked Information. Miguel M. Menendez has bee named director of library services at Somerset Community Col­ lege in Somerset, Kentucky. He previously served at Florida International University. Susan Richards is the new library director at Western State College in Gunnison, Colorado. Sul livan served from 1981 to 1990 as professor and dean o f the College o f Professional Studies at Northern Illinois Univer­ sity (NIU). She also was director o f university li­ braries at NIU for two years. She has been a member o f the faculty o f Peggy Sullivan library science programs at the University o f Chicago and the University o f Pittsburgh. She most recently served as ex­ ecutive director o f ALA from 1992 to 1994. Sul­ livan said o f her appointment, “I want to be where library life is exciting, and right now that is in library education.” Eric Acree is now the resident assistant li­ brarian at the University at Buffalo’s Under­ graduate Library. Sponsored by the U.S. Information Agency and administered by ALA, the program places U.S. librarians in overseas institutions for sev­ eral months to a year. Deaths Norman Brown, professor o f library adminis­ tration emeritus at the University o f Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), died in July. Dur­ ing his 39-year career at UIUC, he served as reference librarian, documents bibliographer, serials acquisition librarian, head o f the Collec­ tion Development and Preservation Depart­ ment, assistant director for bibliographic ser­ vices and preservation, and, most recently, assistant director for special collections and preservation. Before joining UIUC, he worked as reference and acquisition librarian at the Union College Library. Brown compiled the an­ nual Price Index fo r U.S. Periodicals and Seri­ als from 1973 to 1984, and was well known for his chapter in Michael Gorman’s Technical Ser­ vices Today and Tomorrow. He retired from UIUC in 1992. Leslie Mahin Oliver, former assistant to the librarian o f the Houghton Library at Harvard University, died in June at the age o f 95. Oliver attended Oregon State University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree while supporting himself as a lumberjack, schoolteacher, and in other jobs. After receiving an M.A. in English, Oliver taught at several universities, and at the Colorado School o f Mines and the U.S. Naval Academy. After receiving a doctorate from Har­ vard in 1948, he took W. A. Jacobson’s seminar in bibliography, joined the Houghton staff that year as Jacobson’s assistant, and worked there in many capacities until 1953. Jerral R. Parrish, director o f library media ser­ vices at Bethany Lutheran College, died in Feb­ ruary. At the time o f his death, he was on sab­ batical leave pursuing a doctorate in library science at the University o f Wisconsin. He was a member o f ALA and ACRL.
