W a lte r S h a rp h e lp e d u s h e r in th e oil boom in Texas, d rillin g at S p in d le to p som e seven years b e fo re t h e fam o u s g u sh e r. L a te r h e p la y e d a p ro m in e n t role in th e Texas C o m p an y and was co founder o f S h arp -H u g h es Tool C om pany. Sharp died an u n tim ely d e a th in 1912 after struggling to p u t o u t an oil field fire. H is p a p e rs consist o f le t­ ters w ritte n to his wife and family from 1890 to 1912 as w ell as business p ap ers. H is wife, E stelle Boughton S h arp , m aintained th e family’s in te re st in oil b u t increasingly tu rn e d to w hat she called h e r hobbies: social services, w om en’s clubs, and th e in te rn a tio n a l p eace m o v e m e n t. T h ro u g h o u t h e r long life, M rs. S harp was a p ro g ressiv e in sp irit if n o t in n am e, an d in k e e p in g w ith th e goals o f th at m ovem ent she h e lp e d establish th e U n ited F u n d , or as it was c alled th e n , U n ited C h a ritie s, in H o uston. H e r p ap ers cover a variety o f topics, including U n ite d C harities, the peace m o v em en t, Rice U niversity, h e r business and financial affairs, and h e r efforts to record th e history o f th e oil industry in th e Southw est. T he $5 million library, included in th e sta te ’s $125 million bond refe ren d u m last N ovem ber, is sc heduled to be co m p leted in July 1980. W orking draw ings for th e 120,000-volume facility are to be ready in May, and bids o p en ed in August. D r. C lem ons, who died in 1968 at th e age of 88, is c re d ite d w ith th e construction and expan­ sion of A lderm an Library, which o p e n e d in 1938. H e w en t to th e university in 1927, w hen th e li­ b ra ry was still in th e R o tu n d a , a n d re m a in e d th ere u ntil his re tire m e n t in 1950. D u rin g his te n u re , th e A lderm an collection in­ creased from 150,000 to approxim ately 600,000 v o lu m es, and th e n u m b e r of m a n u sc rip ts rose from a few thousand to about 3 .5 million.
