She specializes in the areas o f in­ formation systems and technology, organiza­ tional behavior, and digital libraries. Teresa Burk has been selected as the first W oo­ druff Librarian Fellow for the General Libraries o f Emory University. During her yearlong fellow­ ship, she will work as a beginning librarian in the special collections and archives division. Jane Burke has stepped down as president and CEO o f Endeavor Information Systems and will not ren ew her contract with Endeavor and Elsevier. “The marketplace that w e used to know as library automation is changing so quickly that I really feel that Endeavor needs a fresh view o f h ow to utilize all o f the combined Endeavor and Elsevier strengths to our customers’ best advan­ tage,” said Burke, w ho joined Endeavor in March 1995. Under her leadership, Endeavor released the flagship Voyager integrated library manage­ ment system and the instrumental digital library system, ENCompass. Claudia Gollop, an associate professor at the University o f North Carolina-Chapel Hill’s School o f Information and Library Science, has received a grant supplement for $110,523 to continue a research project titled “Analytic Techniques for Qualitative Metasynthesis.” The award is from the National Institute o f Nursing Research/Na­ tional Institutes o f Health and will support this project through February 2005. The project is directed tow ard the developm ent o f a set o f guidelines to conduct metasyntheses o f qualita­ tive findings in health science research and to design a highly interactive Web-based system and interactive handbook that will contain the guide­ lines. Frances Stith Nilsson, manager o f co llec­ tion development at Babson College, has been awarded the Walter H. Carpenter Prize for ex­ ceptional contributions to the college. Catherine Quinlan, university librarian at the University o f British Columbia (UBC) since 1997, received the Outstanding Alumni Award for 2002 from Dalhousie University’s Associated Alumni and the School o f Library and Information Stud­ ies. From 1985 to 1990, she was director o f the Health Sciences Library and a tenured associate professor in the Faculty o f Medicine at Memorial University o f Newfoundland. From 1990 to 1997, Quinlan was director o f libraries and chief librar­ ian at the University o f Western Ontario, becom­ ing the youngest Dalhousie graduate to be ap­ pointed the head o f a member library o f the Canadian Association o f Research Libraries. Since joining UBC, she has initiated a comprehensive review o f all library operations and has increased the library endowments significantly. Quinlan is currently serving on committees o f ALA, Associa­ tion o f Research Libraries, Council o f Library Re­ sources, and the Council o f the Centre for Re­ search Librarians. In Canada, she was on the Board o f Directors for the Canadian Association o f Re­ search Libraries and a Board member for “Our Roots/Nos racines,” a national digitization project sponsored by the University o f Calgary and Laval University. Jerry Saye, professor at the University o f North Carolina-Chapel H ill’s School o f Infor­ mation and Library Science, has been named a Fulbright teacher for the spring 2003 semes­ ter. From February through June he w ill be based in the Department o f Library and Infor­ mation Science and B ook Studies, Faculty o f Arts at the University o f Ljubljana in Slovenia. He will address topics such as the organization o f information approaches and initiatives in the United States and the history o f the book in the Western Hemisphere. C&RL News ■ February 2003 Barbara Wildemuth, professor at the Uni­ versity o f North Carolina (UNC)-Chapel Hill’s School o f Information and Library Science, has been named the school’s new associate dean for undergraduate studies. Wildemuth played an active role in the creation of the new under­ graduate degree, serving as chair o f UNC’s ad hoc undergraduate major committee. She is also an adjunct associate professor in the depart­ ment o f biomedical engineering at UNC’s School o f Medicine. A p p o i n t m e n t s Lisa Browar has been named university li­ brarian at N ew School University in New York. She previously served as bibliographer for En­ glish and American Literature, Film Studies, and Philosophy and director o f the Lilly Li­ brary at Indiana University. She was also assis­ tant director for Rare Books and Manuscripts at the N ew York Public Library, curator o f Rare Books and Manuscripts at Vassar College, and assistant curator o f American Literature at Yale University’s Beinecke Library. Former chair o f the ACRL Rare Books and Manuscripts Section, Browar is coeditor o f RBM: A Journal o f Rare Books, Manuscripts, and Special Collec­ tions. Tjalda Nauta has been appointed director o f the James P. Adams Library at Rhode Island College in Providence. She started her profes­ sional career in public libraries, changed to aca­ demic business libraries with a reference position at Babson (Massachu­ setts) College, and later held the position of head o f reader services at Bentley College. She was most recently director of the library at Bentley College. She has made several consulting visits to various academic in­ stitutions in Estonia to Tjalda Nauta assist them in develop­ ing library resources for their newly developing business community. Shelley Arlen, associate librarian at the University o f Florida, has been named interim chair o f the collection management depart­ ment. Robert Arndt is now reference/instructional services librarian at the University o f North Caro lina-Pembroke. R e t i r e m e n t s Charles Brunk has retired after 30 years o f service as a monograph cataloger at the Uni­ versity o f Wisconsin-Milwaukee (U W M ) Li­ braries. He was granted academic staff emeri­ tus status by the UW M chancellor. D e a t h s Betty Jo Peterson, w h o served as children’s librarian and later as children’s services coor­ dinator at the Kern County Library in Bakers­ field, California, died September 23, 2002. She retired in 1996, after working 23 years as the curriculum/juvenile librarian at the Henry Madden Library at California State University- Fresno. In ALA, she served on many commit­ tees, including the N ew bery, Caldecott, Laura Ingalls Wilder, and Notable Children’s Books committees. She served also on the John and Patricia Beatty Award Committee o f the Cali­ fornia Library Association and was an active member o f several other library associations.
