C larke w a s th e re v o lu tio n a ry le a d e r o f th e Irish R ep u b lic an B ro th e rh o o d a n d th e first signer o f th e Proclam ation o f th e Irish Republic, w h ic h w a s r e a d a lo u d o n E aster M onday, A pril 2 4 , 1916, d u rin g w h a t b e c a m e k n o w n as th e E aster Rising. T h e u p risin g w a s th e first o f a se ries o f e v e n ts th at c u lm in a te d in th e e sta b lish m e n t o f th e Irish Free State in 1921. F o r his p a rt in th e E aster Rising, C larke w a s e x e c u te d w ith th e first g ro u p o f le a d e rs at K ilm ainham Jail in May 1916. In th e a fte rm a th o f th e E aster Rising, K ath leen C larke e n te re d p o litics a n d in 1939 b e c a m e th e first w o m a n m a y o r o f D ublin.
