Larry Hardesty During his tenure as ACRL president (1999— 2000), he initiated the Excellence in Academic Libraries Award. Hardesty was named ACRL Academic/Research Librarian o f the Year in 2001 and is serving as chair o f the 2003 ACRL National Conference. Derrie Roark Perez has been elected president­ elect of the Association of Southeastern Research Libraries. She has served as interim dean of the University of South Florida (USF) Library System since 1999- She is also a faculty member in the USF School of Library and Information Science. Carolyn Sheehy, Clare and Lucy Oesterle di­ rector of library services at North Central College in Naperville, Illinois, was named the 11th recipi­ ent of the Harold and Eva White First Citizen of the College award. In 1992, Sheehy became the third person in the countiy, and the first in Illi­ nois, to hold an endowed library directorship at a small college. Her other accomplishments include twice cochairing North Central’s strategic planning process and editing two books in the Greenwood Press Library Management College: Managing Busi- ness Collec ions in Librariesa nd lManaging Pe›rformning ArtsC olleaionsi n Academic and Piubilc Libraries. A p p o i n t m e n t s Kathy Arsenault has been appointed dean of die Nelson Poynter Memorial Library at the Uni­ versity of South Florida-St. Petersburg. Arsenault was named library director after serving as acting director since 1999. She had been director of the library’s special collections department since join­ ing the university in 1982. Ronald L. Larsen has been named dean of the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Information Sciences. Phyllis Ruscella is the new director of the Uni­ versity of South Florida-Tampa. As director, Ruscella oversees the access services and reference depart­ ments and the Library Media Center. Her previous position was as the associate university librarian for public services at Georgia State University. Richard H. Swain has been appointed director of library services at West Chester (Pennsylvania) University. Swain has been a member of the West Chester library faculty since 1994, serving first as humanities reference/bibliographic instruction li­ brarian and then as electronic resources librarian. He has extensive local, regional, and national ex­ perience in library automation and resource shar­ ing. Swain’s positions include reference librarian at Northern Michigan University, head of public services and acting director at Cleveland State Uni­ versity, and head of reference at the University of Maine-Orono. Winston Tabb, associate librarian at the Library of Congress since 1995, has been named dean of university libraries and director of the Sheridan U- braries at Johns Hopkins University. Tabb has served on a number of national and international professional library associations, including the As­ sociation of Research Libraries, the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions, and the Soros Foundation—which makes grants for library advancement in the countries o f the former Soviet Union. Leslie Andersen has been appointed visual and performing arts librarian at California State University-Long Beach. R e t i r e m e n t s Dianne McAfee Hopkins has retired after 15 years o f service to the School o f Library and Infor­ mation Studies (SLIS) at the University o f Wiscon- sin-Madison. Among colleagues in the school library community, she is known for her research into intel- 604/ C&RL News ■ September 2002 lectual freedom challenges in schools and the L brary Power Evaluation as well as for her leadershi] in state and national associations. Her work on th SIIS curriculum committee through the period c reaccreditation is especially noteworthy. In 199í Hopkins won the Distinguished Service Awari from the American Association of School Librai ians (AASI). In 1999 she was named to the Inté lectual Freedom Honor Roll by ALA’s Office fc Intellectual Freedom, and in 2001 she was name winner of the Wisconsin and the National AASI SIRS Intellectual Freedom Awards for her researd and advocacy on intellectual freedom issues. Sandy Pfahler, associate director o f the Uni versity o f Wisconsin-General Library System, ha retired after 32 years o f service. D e a t h s Theresa Gillett, 96, w ho was chief catalogue at the University o f New Mexico until her retire ment, has died. After retiring, Gillett becam e ac tive in Friends o f the Albuquerque Public Libiary and was historian, archivist, librarian, and member o f First Congregational United Church o f Chrisi Gertrude Becker Herman, 86, died on Octc ber 2 4 ,2001 ‚ after a distinguished career o f ser vice to children’s librarianship. She was the children’s literature and services specialist on th faculty o f the University o f Wisconsin-Madison School o f Library and Information Studies fron 196 8 until h e r retirem en t in 1985. Herman’s research on French popular literature o f the 19th century for children, “Les Images d’Epinal,” was notable. She had a particular interest in illustration in children’s books and was a regular contributor to Horn Bookm agazine. Her knowledge of children’s books made her an effective member of juries and selection committees for national awards, includ­ ing American Book Awards (Children’s Books), Notable Children’s Books, the Caldecott Award, and the Wilder Award. She also served on the ex­ ecutive board of the Cooperative Children’s Book Center (CCBC) and was a founding member of the Friends o f the CCBC. Arnulfo Trejo, founder and first president (1 971-74) o f REFORMA— the National Associa­ tion to Promote Library and Information Services to Latinos and the Spanish Speaking— has died. Trejo was elected to an honorary membership in ALA in 2001 for his outstanding contributions of lasting importance to libraries and librarianship. In 1992 he created the Foster-Trejo Foundation for Hispanic Library Education. At the University of Arizona Graduate School o f Library and Infor­ mation Science, Trejo established the Graduate Li­ brary Institute for Spanish-Speaking Americans to recruit and train bilingual/bicultural librarians to serve the growing Spanish-speaking community in the United States. Trejo wrote and edited many books and articles, including Quien es Quien: A Who's Who of Spαnish/Speαking lLibrarians in the/United States; Bibliografia Chocan: A GuidetoIηformιαtion Seιvices;and Seminario on Library αnd Inform αtiαn Sev ices fo r the Spanish-Speaking. Trejo received the Distinguished Alumni Award from the Kent State University School o f Library Science; the Distinguished Ser­ vice Award from the University o f Arizona School of Information Resources and Library Science; and the REFORMA Lifetime Achievement Award. Sylvia Walsh, librarian of the Mathematical Sci­ e n ce s Library on Rutgers University’s B u sch campus, has died. Walsh worked at the Rutgers University Libraries for m ore than 30 years, serving as library faculty secretary (1 9 8 1 -8 3 ) and as a m em ber o f academ ic promotion/re­ appointm ent com m ittees. She contributed to two American Mathematical Society surveys o f m ath em atics re s e a rc h lib raries. W alsh also au th ored a b r ie f study o f “T h e F re s c o e s o f Tavant,” com paring the fresco es o f Tavant to others in the Loire valley o f France. ■
