T he Chicago M idw inter Meeting has been set for Saturday, January 17, 1987, at 2:00 p .m ., with the location to be a n nounced in the conference program. This first dis cussion session will explore the various organiza tional structures used in university libraries and w hat innovative structural changes are occurring as a result of the introduction of online systems and other new technology, new relationships with aca demic com puting centers, or other trends faced by academic libraries today. How are staff adapting? How successful are the changes? Three speakers have agreed to make brief p re sentations. Joanne Euster, who is now university li b r a r i a n at R u tg e rs as w ell as A C R L Vice- President/President-Elect, is doing preparation for a book on library organizational structures and will share some of her early findings. Jordan Sce panski, director of the lib rary and learning re sources at C a lif o r n ia S ta te U n iv ersity , L o n g Beach, will be the second speaker. Library units there are broad subject areas or departments with a de-emphasis on function-based units. The organi zation is a matrix structure which follows a faculty model. C harling Fagan, assistant director of social meet sciences at C olu m b ia University L ibraries, will speak about the impact on job responsibilities and library structures as a result of the Com puting C en ter reporting to the Library. The three presentations are intended to serve as a kick-off to discussion and a chance for attendees to share experiences. If you plan to attend and would like to share your organizational chart with the group, please send a copy to Janice Koyam a, Head L ibrarian, Moffitt U ndergraduate Library, Uni versity of California, Berkeley, CA 94720, by J a n u ary 10, 1987, so th at copies can be made. If you prefer, you can bring 20–30 copies to the meeting. The ULS C urrent Topics Discussion group is a concept which will be tested during 1987 at M id winter and at the Annual Conference in order to evaluate the need for this type of forum. The key is to identify current concerns of librarians working in all areas and at all levels in university libraries and provide an opportunity to discuss these con cerns in a group of 40 or fewer people. In this way, librarians can make contact with colleagues with m utual interests and can share ideas to help solve problems at their own institutions. The organizing committee welcomes suggestions for future topics. Please send ideas to Janice Koyama, Chair, at the address listed above, or bring suggestions to the Midwinter session on January 17. ■ ■ 730 / C& RL News P u b lic a tio n s : S u n d a y , J a n u a r y 18, 11:30 a .m .– 12:30 p.m. Security: Sunday, January 18, 2:00–4:00 p.m. Security— Hearing on Guidelines: Saturday, J a n u ary 17, 9:30– 11:00 a.m. Standards: Saturday, January 17, 2:00–4:00 p .m .; Sunday, January 18, 2:00–4:00 p .m .; Monday, January 19, 9:30– 11:00 a.m. Slavic and East European Section Executive: Monday, January 19, 9:30– 11:00 a.m. Conference Program P la n n in g — San Francisco, 1987: Sunday, January 18. 8:00–9:00 a.m. Continuing Education on Slavic and East E u ro pean Librarianship in North America: Sunday, January 18, 9:30– 11:00 a.m. Cyrillic Romanization and Automation: Sunday, January 18, 2:00–4:00 p.m . It is merely a clarification in the wording of the statement which brings it into harm ony with ALA Policy 54.4. The policy continues to recognize the m aster’s degree from an ALA-accredited program. F urther, the policy regarding the “terminal profes sional degree” does not compromise requirements imposed by some institutions for another advanced academic degree. During committee discussions on the proposed change, other substantive issues have also been dis cussed. Among them have been the acceptance of the m aster’s degree as the “term inal” degree for ac ademic librarians and the assumption that ALA is the only o rg an iz atio n w hich accredits lib ra ry school programs. The committee recognizes that m any universities now require additional graduate degrees for librarians employed as faculty m em bers; furtherm ore, library school programs offered in other countries and accredited by different orga nizations are excluded from this statement. These and other concerns related to this statement will re ceive further deliberation by the committee. For the time being, the only change recommended is that cited above. Please send your comments about this proposed revision to the committee chair, Keith C ottam , 1167 Inca Drive, Laram ie, WY 82070, or call him at The University of W yoming at (307) 766-3279. T he C om m ittee would also ap p reciate hearing about your concerns relating to other possible revi sions. Comments must be received by January 5, 1987. ■ ■
