A beautiful fall day greeted me as I arrived in M in neapolis on Thursday, O cto be r 16. Tom Peischl, dean of the library at M ankato State University and a m em ber of the A C R L Budget and F in an ce C o m mittee, picked me up at the airport and drove me to Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter. On the way we stopped at E m m a ’s for a typical fam ily - type lunch while admiring the bountiful colors on the trees and related fall activities. T h a t afternoon, I led a discussion on “Directors/ Administrators Looking at Change in the W o r k p lace” with members of the Council of Academic L ib ra ry Directors (C A L D ). Many issues related to technology/automation surfaced and the need for more and better staff development and continuing e d u c a tio n p ro g ra m s b e c a m e very a p p a re n t. It must also be noted that Minnesota academ ic li brary directors are very strong in the area of coop eration and sharing am ong private and public in stitutions. After a fine meal prepared in the kitchen of Gustavus Adolphus College, members of C A L D and I continued our discussion into the late eve ning, after which Tom drove me to the Holiday Inn in M ankato. E a r ly in the morning, I was able to enjoy a n other superb Minnesota fall day and the marvelous sounds of geese and loons during a long walk. Carol Johnson, cataloger at the University of Minnesota L ibraries and chair of the A C R L Minnesota C h a p ter, graciously drove me back to the Gustavus Adolphus College for the meeting, which focused on “C h an g e in the W o r k p la c e .” Approximately one hundred librarians partici pated. I talked to them about ten challenges facing academ ic libraries and suggested a few creative so lutions. Five discussion groups on “T h e O C L C O x ford P r o je c t , ” “T h e L ib r a r ia n as I n t e l l e c t u a l ,” “Sharing: Collections and E xp ertise,” “Changing L ib ra ry Buildings,” and “M LA Survey on Profes sional D evelopm ent” completed the program in the afternoon. T h e co n fere n ce arra n g e m e n t provided am ple opportunity for sharing inform ation and discussing problems. After lunch, participants were able to see the new library, chapel, and sculptures by Paul G ranlund, sculptor-in-residence. Some of us had the rare opportunity to meet Mr. G ranlund and discuss his b e a u t i f u l s c u l p t u r e s w i t h h i m . — H a n n e lo r e B.
