Gonzalez, Acquisitions Librari an, University of California Law Library, Da vis, CA 95616 Mrs. Ann M. Randall, School of Library Ser vice, Columbia University, New York, NY 10027 In September 1973, the School of Li brary Science of Simmons College, Bos ton, will inaugurate a new program lead ing to the Doctor of Arts degree. The doctoral program will specialize in pub lic or academic library administration or school media center administration. Among other requirements for admission, candidates must present not only a grad uate degree from a program accredited by the American Library Association but also a graduate degree in another disci pline. The Doctor of Arts, a new academic credential wholly distinct in character from either the Ph.D. or the D.L.S., is designed to meet the particular need of practicing administrators at the doctoral level. A distinguishing characteristic of the D.A. degree is the absence of any requirement for a dissertation. Insofar as is known, Simmons College is the first to offer the Doctor of Arts degree in library science, although it is currently available in various areas of the arts and sciences in other colleges and universities. Addi tional information about this new pro gram may be obtained from the admin istrative assistant of the School of Li brary Science. ec e S M 63
