P e o p l e i n t h e N e w sAnn-Christe Galloway Appointments John Shepherd has been named university archivist and head of special collections at the Catholic University of America. Shane MacDonald has taken on expanded responsibilities as special collections archivist at the Catholic University of America. Maria Mazzenga has been named curator for the American Catholic History Research Center at the Catholic University of America. Retirements Gordon N. Baker, dean of libraries at Clayton State University, has retired with 40 years of ser- vice to the university. Baker started as a part-time/ weekend reference librar- ian, became head of pub- lic services, director, and the first dean of the library. Baker also served as class- room and library/media specialist in the Griffin- Spalding County and Clay- ton County school systems in Georgia. He worked as library/media specialist and coordinator of instructional technology and media specialist in the Henry County (Georgia) School System, retiring in 2004. He also served as president of the Southeastern Library Associa- tion (2014–15). Baker has been recognized by his peers receiving many awards, including the 1988 Georgia Elementary School Library/Media Special- ist of the Year and the William E. Patterson Service Award. He has been a division member of AASL and ACRL, and currently serves as a member of the Board of United for Libraries. Baker also has retired from the position of Georgia Library Association administrative services coordinator, after 17 years. Deaths William “Bill” Miller, dean of libraries at Florida Atlantic University for 27 years, has died. He was active in ACRL and served as association presi- dent (1996–97). During his leadership, the ACRL Board approved fund- ing for the development of the ACRL Institute for Information Literacy Im- mersion Program, now in its 25th year. Under Miller’s leadership, the ACRL Colleagues Com- mittee raised more than $280,000 in support for the 1999 and 2001 ACRL Annual Conferences. Miller authored numerous articles and books in the field, publishing in C&RL, C&RL News, and The Chronicle of Higher Education. He also served as contributing editor to Library Issues and as editor of The Reference Librarian. Miller was also respon- sible for establishing the annual ACRL academic library statistics program in 1998 to improve access to library data for the profession. The ACRL Aca- demic Library Trends and Statistics Survey remains one of Miller’s most important legacies. Miller was a founder of the Southeast Florida Library Network and was the 2014 recipient of ALA’s Isadore Gilbert Mudge Award.
