M atson, assistant professor and assistant cataloging librarian, has been named the 1998 recipient of the Library Affairs Out­ standing Faculty Award. She joined the Li­ brary Affairs faculty in 1978 as assistant seri­ als librarian. She earned a Ph.D. in Linguis­ tics from the University of Wisconsin, Madi­ son, in 1972 and her MLS in 1977. A p p o in t m e n t s M illicen t “P e n n y ” A b ell has been named acting interim university librarian of the University of California (UC) Berkeley Li­ braries after having been named univer­ sity librarian emerita upon retirement from the Yale University Library in January 1995. Prior to her appointment at Yale, Abell served for eight years as university librar­ ian at UC San Diego and in administrative positions at the State University of New York at Buffalo and the University of Wash­ ington. She has been active in national li­ brary activities: a founding member of the Commission on Preservation and Access and the Digital Preservation Consortium, president of ACRL, chair of the Center for Research Libraries, and an executive com­ mittee member of the Research Libraries Group. Abell has served as a consultant advising university administrators and li­ brarians at numerous institutions, includ­ ing Columbia, Harvard, Toronto, Michigan, Northwestern, New York University, and the New York Public Library. Adrian W. A lexan d er was appointed ex­ ecutive director of the Big 12 Plus Library Consortium. The Big 12 Plus is a regional consortium of research libraries in the greater Midwest with com­ mon interests in programs related to infor­ mation access, document delivery, distance learning, new information technologies, and cooperative collection development. Richard M. Cochran has been named dean of Library and Instructional Services at Ferris State University in Big Rapids, Michigan. He was most recently dean of the library at Monmouth University in West Long Branch, New Jersey, and previously served as library direc­ tor at three colleges in Vermont and O hio. Peter S. Graham will become university li­ brarian at Syracuse University, effective Sep­ tember 1. He is currently the associate uni­ versity librarian for Technical and Networked Information Services at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey— a position he has held since 1987. In 1995, Graham estab­ lished university-wide online access to major citation and full-text da­ tabases. From 1989 to 1992, Graham served as associate vice president for information services P e te r S. G ra h a m at Rutgers. In this posi­ tion he created a unified University Comput­ ing Services by combining and reorganizing previously separate academic and adminis­ trative computing groups. Graham received an MLS from Indiana University, a bachelor of philosophy degree in English Renaissance literature from Oxford University, and a mas­ ter of arts degree with honors in English Renaissance literature from Columbia Uni­ versity. Graham is a member of the advisory board of Book Arts Press at the University of Virginia; a member of the governing bodies of the Bibliographical Society of America and the ALA; and a member and chair of the gov­ erning board of the Center for Electronic Texts in the Humanities, a joint organization of Princeton and Rutgers universities. Shirley Leung has been appointed univer­ sity librarian at Hong Kong Baptist Univer­ sity. Leung has been at the University of Cali­ fornia, Irvine, for 14 years, where she served as assistant university librarian for technical services, associate uni­ versity librarian for re­ search and instructional services, and, most re­ cently, interim univer­ sity librarian. From 1992-93, she was se­ S h irle y Leu n g lected to be an Ameri­ can Council on Education Fellow and served as an intern in the Office of the Senior Vice President and Provost at Arizona State Uni­ versity. Leung received a B.A. in History from Lake Erie College, an MLS from the State Uni­ versity of New York at Albany, and an M.A. in Political Science from the State University of New York at Binghamton. Active in a wide range of campus and professional organiza­ tions, she currently cochairs the Invited Pa­ pers Subcommittee for the 9th ACRL National Conference. Greg Pronevitz has been appointed the first regional administrator for the Northeast Mas­ sachusetts Regional Library System in North Andover. Pronevitz previously directed the Library Technologies Departm ent at OHIONET for eight years. His professional experience also includes positions at the Ohio State University Libraries, Chemical Abstracts Service, and the Center for Research Librar­ ies. He holds a master’s decree from the State University of New York at Albany School of Library and Information Science and has a bachelor’s in Russian language and literature. Pronevitz was an active member of the Aca­ demic Library Association of Ohio, where he was a past-president and board member. He has held committee positions with the ALA, Association of Specialized and Cooperative Library Agencies, and Interlibrary Cooperation and Networking Section. Stephen R. Shorb has been appointed li­ brary director for the Manchester Commu­ nity-Technical College in Manchester, Con­ necticut. He was previously head of learn­ ing resources at the Higher Colleges of Tech­ nology located at Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates. He began his library career as reference librarian at Southwest State Uni­ versity in Minnesota and has worked as a computer marketing manager for IBM and Hewlett-Packard. His undergraduate degree and MLS are both from the University of Iowa. Pamela Snelson has been named college librarian at Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Snelson was previ­ ously associate librarian at Drew University with responsibilities for automation and pub­ lic services. Linda Yamamoto is the new head librarian and bibliographer of Mathematical and Com­ puter Sciences Library at Stanford University. R e t ir e m e n t s Marvin E. Monsma, library director for the Hekman Library, will retire in August after 33 years (28 as library director) of service to Calvin College and Calvin Theological Seminary in Grand Rapids, Michigan. īn his earlier years at Calvin, Monsma taught undergraduate-level courses in library sci­ ence, served as a library consultant to Christian schools in Michigan, Il­ linois, and Indiana, and taught graduate-level li­ brary science courses for the University of Michi­ gan and Western Michi­M arvin E. Monsma gan University at their Grand Rapids Extension Centers. He was part of the group that formed the Michigan Library Consortium and served on its Executive Coun­ cil. Prior to his career as a librarian, Monsma taught English and speech at the secondary level for eight years. He received a B.A. from Calvin College, an M.A. in Education from Michigan State University, and an MLS from the University of Michigan. Robert Wedgeworth, university librarian at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) Library, has announced his plan to re­ tire in August 1999- Wedgeworth was ap­ pointed interim university librarian in Septem­ ber 1992 and was appointed university librar­ ian in November 1993- During his tenure, the library completed development of a compre­ hensive technology infrastructure and has pro­ pelled its Mortenson Center for International Library Programs into the forefront of interna­ tional foreign exchange programs. Wedgeworth is a graduate of Wabash College and received his MLS from UIUC’s School of Library Science in 1961. He was executive direc­ tor of the ALA (1972— 1985) and dean of Co­ lumbia University’s School of Library Sci­ ence (1985-1992). He was elected president twice by the Interna­ Robert W e d g e w o rth tional Federation of Li­ brary Associations and Institutions (1991-1995, 1995-1997). Wedgeworth has received many awards, including the 1989 Joseph Lippincott Award, the 1997 Melvil Dewey Award (both from the ALA), and the 1991 Distinguished Alumnus Award from the UIUC Graduate School of Library and Information Science. D e a th s John Maxwell, retired reference librarian at the University of California, Riverside (UCR), died on March 29. He began his career at UCR in 1956, working in the acquisitions de­ partment of the Rivera Library and later join­ ing the reference department. He received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Rochester in 1933 and his MLS from the Uni­ versity of Southern California in 1960. He retired in 1972 after 17 years of service.
