Alex Wade has been appointed systems librarian at the University of Washington in Seattle. Linda Yamamoto is the new head librarian and bibliographer of Mathematical and Com­ puter Sciences Library at Stanford University. R e t ir e m e n t s Marvin E. Monsma, library director for the Hekman Library, will retire in August after 33 years (28 as library director) of service to Calvin College and Calvin Theological Seminary in Grand Rapids, Michigan. īn his earlier years at Calvin, Monsma taught undergraduate-level courses in library sci­ ence, served as a library consultant to Christian schools in Michigan, Il­ linois, and Indiana, and taught graduate-level li­ brary science courses for the University of Michi­ gan and Western Michi­M arvin E. Monsma gan University at their Grand Rapids Extension Centers. He was part of the group that formed the Michigan Library Consortium and served on its Executive Coun­ cil. Prior to his career as a librarian, Monsma taught English and speech at the secondary level for eight years. He received a B.A. from Calvin College, an M.A. in Education from Michigan State University, and an MLS from the University of Michigan. Robert Wedgeworth, university librarian at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) Library, has announced his plan to re­ tire in August 1999- Wedgeworth was ap­ pointed interim university librarian in Septem­ ber 1992 and was appointed university librar­ ian in November 1993- During his tenure, the library completed development of a compre­ hensive technology infrastructure and has pro­ pelled its Mortenson Center for International Library Programs into the forefront of interna­ tional foreign exchange programs. Wedgeworth is a graduate of Wabash College and received his MLS from UIUC’s School of Library Science in 1961. He was executive direc­ tor of the ALA (1972— 1985) and dean of Co­ lumbia University’s School of Library Sci­ ence (1985-1992). He was elected president twice by the Interna­ Robert W e d g e w o rth tional Federation of Li­ brary Associations and Institutions (1991-1995, 1995-1997). Wedgeworth has received many awards, including the 1989 Joseph Lippincott Award, the 1997 Melvil Dewey Award (both from the ALA), and the 1991 Distinguished Alumnus Award from the UIUC Graduate School of Library and Information Science. D e a th s John Maxwell, retired reference librarian at the University of California, Riverside (UCR), died on March 29. He began his career at UCR in 1956, working in the acquisitions de­ partment of the Rivera Library and later join­ ing the reference department. He received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Rochester in 1933 and his MLS from the Uni­ versity of Southern California in 1960. He retired in 1972 after 17 years of service.
