Its p u rp o se is to reco rd significant activities o f A C R L an d to re p o rt new s ab o u t aca­ dem ic a n d re sea rc h libraries. As th e official AC R L new s m agazine, C & R L N ew s m aintains a re c o rd o f selected actions a n d policy statem en ts o f th e Asso­ ciation a n d p u blishes tim ely reports on th e activities o f A C R L a n d its sections, com m ittees, discussion groups, councils, task forces, an d chapters. As a vehicle for com m unication am ong college an d re sea rc h libraries, C & R L N ew s re p o rts news item s p e rtin e n t to academ ic a n d research librarian- ship, including inform ation on bibliographic in­ struction, con tin u in g education, appointm ents, ac­ quisition o f special collections, grants to libraries, n ew technology, a n d p ublications (b rief notices). T h e ed ito r bears responsibility for th e co n ten ts o f each issue o f C & R L New s. M aterials selected by the e d ito r m ust b e new sw orthy, tim ely, an d o f practical value to p e o p le in th e field. T h e e d ito r has authority to d ecide w hat m aterial is ap p ro p riate for p ublica­ tion, b a se d on th e following guidelines. T h e e d ito r also reserves th e rig h t to m ake a p p ro p riate revisions in m aterial selected for p u blication in o rd e r to standardize style o r im prove clarity (except official A C RL d o cum ents, p re sid en t’s letters, an d similar m aterial). F orm al, theoretical, o r research -o rien ted articles in ap p ro p riate for C & R L N ew s will b e fo rw arded to th e e d ito r o f College & Research Libraries for review. I. Length A rticles an d colum ns should b e n o m o re th an 3,000 w ords an d no less th a n 500 w ords. II. Style C & R L N ew s is inform al, inform ative, a n d accu­ rate. III. Content M aterial selected should fall into on e o f th e following categories: a. R eports on a p ro ject, program , o r research u n derw ay o r recen tly co m p leted d ealing w ith a to p ic relevant to academ ic librarianship. Footnotes should b e m inim al a n d charts o r tables avoided. T h ese re p o rts m ay b e p relim inary descriptions o f program s o r research to b e p u b lish ed form ally at a la te r d a te in library lite ra tu re (e.g., “U n d erg rad u ate T e rm P a p e r C itations in Tw o C olleges an d Two Universities: A C om parison,” January 1990). b.
