T h e title of university lib ra ria n is new and reflects a re­ o rg a n iz ed a d m in is tra ­ tiv e s t r u c t u r e . F r o m Ju ly 1971 until his retire­ m ent in Ju ly 198 2 , Jo h n T . Dem os had held the top lib rary m anagem ent position, first as director and la ter as dean o f li­ braries. F o r th e p a s t sev en years Bow m an has been w ith th e G e lm a n L i ­ b rary at G eorge W a sh ­ M artha A. B ow m anington U n iversity, and since 1978 she has held the position of associate university lib ra ria n . B e­ fore jo in in g the G elm an L ib ra ry sta ff, Bow m an had been w ith the University o f M aryland at C o l­ lege Park since 1969. H er last position at th a t insti­ tution was as head o f th e acquisitions departm ent. She is the im m ediate past president o f the D is­ trict o f C o lu m b ia L ib ra ry A ssociation and is cu r­ rently ch a ir o f th e Poster Sessions N ational C o m ­ m ittee for A L A ’s 1983 Annual C on feren ce. She has served as an academ ic consultant to H ow ard U ni­ versity, C a th o lic U niversity, and the W o rld Bank. R i c h a r d K . G a r d n e r , professor o f lib rary and inform ation science at the U niversity of C a lifo rn ia , L o s A n g e le s , a n d fo r m e r e d ito r o f C h o ic e (1 9 6 3 -1 9 6 6 , 1 9 7 2 -1 9 7 7 ), has been named director of the E c o le de B ib lio th éco no m ie at the University of M on treal. G ard n er has been on the fa cu lty at U C L A since 1977. He had previously served on the lib ra ry school facu lty at th e University o f M on­ trea l, the only A L A -accredited school th a t provides all instruction in the Fren ch language, from 1969 to 197 2 , the last tw o years as director. G ard n er served as the founding editor o f C h o ic e when it began under a grant from the C ouncil on L ib ra ry Resources in 1963. He continued as editor until 1966 w hen he left to teach a t th e School o f L i ­ brary Scien ce at C ase W estern Reserve University, and returned for an oth er term as editor in 1972. DEATH W a l t e r P i l k i n g t o n , lib r a r ia n e m e ritu s o f H am ilton C ollege, C lin to n , New York, died on Ja n u a ry 2 in U tica, New York, after a b rief illness. From 1937 to 1950 Pilkington served as reference lib rarian at the New York Public L ib ra ry , where he founded and edited A m erican Notes an d Q ue­ ries in 1941. In 1952 he was appointed lib rarian of H am ilton College. His scholarly activities included research on the life and works o f Sam uel Kirkland and E z ra Pound and continued after his retirem ent in 1976.
