T h e collection, ra n k e d fifth in th e w orld, contains so m e 10,000 pieces o f w hich o n ly a b o u t o n e -fifth h a v e b e e n p ublished. T he U niver­ sity o f M ichigan papyri date from a b o u t 1000 B.C. to 1000 A.D., b u t the m ajority date from th e th ird c e n tury B.C. to th e sev en th cen tu ry A.D. a n d all c o m e from th e Nile valley.
