The collection consists prim a­ rily o f 18th- an d 19th-century codes b u t includes copies o f th e first A m erican edition of B la c k sto n e s c o m m e n ta rie s a n d the very rare Registrant Brevium, thought to b e the first law b o o k printed from m ovable type. Buffalo State College's United Students G overnm ent has given $30,000 to Butler Library to p u rc h a se n e w volum es a n d e n h a n c e the college’s com puterized public access catalog, k n ow n as SHERLOCK. “Traditionally, USG has b een m ore oriented tow ard supporting social an d athletic opportunities for stu d en ts,” said W illiam G anley, USG’s v ice-p resid en t, w h o originated th e idea o f th e library gift. “But in light o f th e b u d g e t situation, the library seem ed like an area w e could help that w o u ld directly affect th e student pop u latio n an d leave a last­ ing im pact.” Indiana University's Lilly Library has re c e iv e d $313,000 from th e e sta te o f Ruth Crawford Mitchell o f Pittsburgh. Mitchell w as a close friend an d bio g rap h er o f Alice Masaryk, d au g h ter o f C zechoslovakia’s first president, T hom as G. Masaryk, and h ad earlier d o n ated a large collection o f Masaryk family p ap ers to th e Lilly Library. The D orothy Harris Libraries En­ dow m ent, created w ith a principal o f $50,000, will b e u se d to p urchase a n d m aintain books, periodicals, an d o ther m aterials related to sport an d exercise psychology. An additional $30,000 d o n a te d b y H arris will e n d o w th e D orothy Harris Lecture Series, to su p p o rt visiting lec­ tures by em in en t teachers an d researchers in sports psychology.
