A fore-edge p a in te d b o o k lying closed o n a table looks n o different from any o th er bo o k , w ith the e x cep tio n o f th e g o ld leaf so m e­ tim es fo u n d o n th e p a g e s’ o u te r edges. The painting is rev ealed b y gripping th e b o o k an d b en d in g back, o r fanning, its pages. The University of California, Santa Cruz Library has received a collection o f m ore th an fifty 16th-century b o o k s from university p ro ­ fessor H ay d en W hite. W hite collected m ost o f th e b o o k s from R om an b o o k stalls w h ile a g rad u ate stu d en t in Italy in th e 1950s. T he col­ lection includes a rare 1535 edition o f W itelo’s Optics, th e first E u ro p ean treatise o n th e su b ­ ject, as w ell as a n u m b e r o f rare Aldines. The University of Manitoba Libraries has receiv ed a collection o f 1,200 item s relating to issues o f aboriginal justice. T he collection in­ cludes gov ern m en t reports, studies, an d u n p u b ­ lished p a p e rs a n d covers a w id e range o f to p ­ ics including: prison, m yth a n d legend, land claims, police, aboriginal courts, an d self-gov­ ernm ent. It also includes transcripts o f public hearings in ap p ro x im ately 30 M anitoba com ­ m unities. The U n iv e rs ity o f N eb ra sk a-L in c o ln , receiv ed a collection o f nearly 90 rare b o o k s a n d related item s w ritten b y Willa C ather from C ather ad m irer J. R obert Sullivan. T h e collec­ tio n contains lim ited a n d sig n ed first editions o f C ather’s novels an d poetry, m agazine articles w ritten b y C ather, a signed p e rso n a l letter, an d p h o to g ra p h s.
