C&RL News June 2020 302 Jon E. Cawthorne, dean of the Wayne State University Library System and the School of Information Sciences, is the 83rd president of ACRL. “I am excited, honored, and humbled to serve ACRL. Although we are in the early stages, COVID-19 has replaced our social gatherings with shelter in place orders and, tragically, taken the lives of loved ones. This unprecedented moment on Earth presents anxiety and uncertainty about the future. Yet, despite how our circumstance may ap- pear or how long we will endure, I want to inspire us to evolve, adapt, and believe in a vibrant future for ourselves and our associa- tion. More than ever, I’m counting on every member and each Board Member to care about one another, maintain your sanity, stay calm, be creative, and hold on to hope. “In the coming year, as we deal with an essential question coming out of the pandemic—How will all academic librar- ies serve institutions, students, and alumni in ways that meet this moment?--I’ll focus on greater understanding of organizational cultures. This means examining the health, well-being, and beliefs of individuals that come together to influence our organiza- tions. I believe we can have these discus- sions remotely, and they will reveal our values, our practices, our purpose, and our ideas of individual and collective action. It is my hope we make this year about our future, building on the foundations of what we do to create a thriving, member-driven ACRL. “This is a season of great change at ACRL. I was hoping to see you all at ALA Annual Conference in Chicago, but I look forward to working with you remotely, holding virtual town halls and expanding our virtual com- munity of ACRL leaders. We already miss our retired executive director, but because of her wonderful, consistent leadership, ACRL is a strong pillar within ALA. Together we will reimagine an association that best serves all our members today and well into the future.” During his 25 years of ACRL member- ship, Cawthorne has served as chair of the ACRL Diversity Alliance Steering Com- mittee (2016-present), as a member of the ACRL 2019 Conference Colleagues Com- mittee (2017-present), and as a member of the ACRL President’s Program Committee (2015-17). ACRL has been my professional home for 17 years and has been extremely integral to my growth as a librarian and administrator. Throughout the election process, I learned the many ways that ACRL has impacted members’ sense of community, professional values, and professional growth. Our participation in the association is collective, and also very personal. In this role, I look forward to continuing to engage with colleagues from across the academic library spectrum and beyond to learn more about their particular perspectives, aspirations, and challenges. My goal is to continue to foster a strong member-driven community that welcomes multiple perspectives and challenges us all to build a stronger, adaptable, and forward- thinking profession. “We are facing dramatic times in our world and within our association. I expect the next three years will be intense. We will be grappling with ALA’s reorganiza- tion, coping with challenging fiscal times, managing through the transition to a new ACRL executive director, and, hopefully C&RL News June 2020 304 soon, learning how we’ll be permanently changed in a post COVID-19 world. I am excited by this opportunity to engage in these big, thorny issues of our profession, as well as to continue to move forward ACRL’s strategic plan and priorities. I am eager to join ACRL’s amazing staff, Board of Directors, and fellow members in doing the challenging and rewarding work that lies ahead. Together, as a network of col- leagues, we will discover additional ways our association can help to advance initia- tives that address our profession’s evolving needs.
