LC online chats 
The Library of Congress Preservation Directorate 
is sponsoring a series of online discussions with 
preservation professionals. Future chats are 
scheduled with Marlon Greene about preserving 
special media on July 14, 2004, with Sylvia 
Albro about paper conservation on September 
1, and with Andrew Robb about photograph 
conservation on October 6. Each will last one 
hour, starting at 2 p.m. To participate, log on to

Preservation education directory 
ALCTS Publishing, a service of ALA’s Association 
for Library Collections and Technical Services, has 
mounted online the 8th edition of Preservation 
Education Directory by Christine Wiseman 
and Julie Arnott. This 2002 directory lists 
the graduate preservation program, courses 
taught at library schools, organizations that 
offer continuing education opportunities, and 
graduate conservation programs. 

The directory is available free at www.

Film guide 
The National Film Preservation Foundation 
(NFPF) has published The Film Preservation 
Guide: the Basics for Archives, Libraries, and 
Museums. In 138 pages, this primer covers the 
reasons for preserving film, the nature of fi lm and 
how it decays, handling, inspection, the curatorial 
role, duplication, storage, cataloging, legal issues, 
and access. It also contains an edge code chart, 
a print condition report form, lists of vendors, a 
glossary, and a selected bibliography. 

The guide is available free of charge at

in the Preservation Basics section. Print 
copies are available for $8.00 (to cover shipping

Airborne pollutants 
The Canadian Conservation Institute (CCI) has 
published Airborne Pollutants in Museums, 
Galleries and Archives: Risk Assessment, Control 
Strategies, and Preservation Management. 
This 168­page paperback defines the most 
likely airborne pollutants found in the indoor 
environments of cultural institutions, provides 
basic tools to assess the risk to collections and do 
cost­benefit analyses, and establishes strategies 
for flexible, pragmatic solutions.

Preserving photographs 
The George Eastman House, the Image 
Permanence Institute (IPI), and the Rochester 
Institute of Technology (RIT) are again offering 
the week­long program “Preserving Photographs 
in a Digital World,” August 21–26, 2004, in 
Rochester, New York. The program covers 
preservation of chemical photographs, including 
the history and technology of photographic 
processes, deterioration of negatives, prints and 
transparencies, care, storage, and display. It also 
covers the basics of digital imaging for photograph 
collections, including the role of digital imaging in 
collection management, digital project planning, 
vendor and equipment selection, image capture, 
quality control, image database systems, storage, 
and display. James Reilly of IPI and Grant Romer 
of George Eastman House are co­chairs of the 
program, with Jean­Louis Bigourdan, Franziska 
Frey, and Douglas Nishimura of RIT, Debbie 
Hess Norris of the Winterthur Museum, Steve 
Puglia of NARA, and David Wooters of George 
Eastman House as lecturers.
