june04c.indd P e o p l e i n t h e N e w s Ann-Christe Galloway Kimberly Douglas A p p o i n t m e n t s Kimberly Douglas has been named university librarian at the California Institute of Technology. She had served as acting director of the libraries since April 2003. A staff member in the Caltech Library System since 1988, Douglas first served as head of reader services. She then served as director of the Sherman Fairchild Library of Engineering and Applied Science and as head of technical information services. Douglas has been involved in designing and implementing automated library services. She introduced desktop publishing to the Caltech libraries, initiating their online presence in the early 1990s, and provided leadership in the design and implementation of Caltech’s document delivery service, TOC/DOC. Douglas was instrumental in the planning and execution of the Sherman Fairchild Library of Engineering and Applied Science, which opened in 1997. She has published on a variety of topics, most recently on aspects of digital collections. Douglas has served on the IEEE Library Advisory Committee and is currently a member of the Visiting Committee for the Goddard Space Flight Center Library. She has been active in Library and Information Technology Association Interest Groups by helping to found, chair, and develop programs for the Interest Group on Electronic Publishing. Charlotte Cubbage has been appointed bibliographer for English and comparative literature at Northwestern University Library. She will continue as head of core/reserve. Diane Geraci is now head of the science libraries at the University of Michigan University Library. Melissa A. Gottwald has joined the staff of the Iowa State University Library as collection archivist. Phelix Hanible is now the associate university librarian for technical and access services at the University of Michigan University Library. Kevin Hawkins has been appointed electronic publishing librarian in the Scholarly Publishing Office at the University of Michigan. Esmeralda Kale has joined Northwestern University Library as bibliographer for Africana. Evelyn Kuo is now the interim head of the Center for Chinese Studies Library at the University of California-Berkeley. Lea Leininger has joined Jackson Library at the University of North Carolina- Greensboro as life sciences librarian. Shawn Martin has been appointed Early English Books Online Project outreach librarian at the University of Michigan University Library. Cindy Mitchell has been appointed head of the Cary Veterinary Medical Library at Auburn University Libraries. Dennis Moser has been named the new digital content manager at Southern Methodist University. Kristin Partlo has been appointed reference and instruction librarian at Carleton College in Northfi eld, Minnesota. Joanne Rich has been appointed information management librarian in the Health Sciences Libraries at the University of Washington Libraries. Heija B. Ryoo is now Korean cataloger in the East Asia Library at the University of Washington Libraries. Yunah Sung has been named Korean studies librarian at the University of Michigan Asia Library. John Price Wilkin has been named associate university librarian for library information technology at the University of Michigan University Library. Perry Willett has been appointed head of digital production services, Library Information Technology, at the University of Michigan University Library. R e t i re m e n t s Anthony Aguirre, head of the Taubman Medical Library and coordinator of the health sciences libraries at the University of Michigan, has retired. Annie Chang, head of the Center for Chinese Studies Library at the University of California-Berkeley, has retired after 30 years of service. Adye Bel Evans, readers services librarian/ curator of graphic collections, has retired from the University of Michigan University Library. Ann Ford, reference librarian at the University of Iowa Libraries will retire effective June 30, 2004. She began working for the University of Iowa Libraries as a student assistant in 1959 and her combined years of service in the libraries’ cataloging, acquisitions, and reference departments total more than 29 years. Carolyn Kohler, head of Government Publications at the University of Iowa Libraries will retire effective June 30, 2004. Kohler has been a government documents librarian and, for the last 23 years of her 36-year career, she has served as the head of the Libraries’ Government Publications Department. She was honored this past year by the ALA Government Documents Roundtable as its 2003 recipient of the prestigious James Bennett Childs Award for significant lifetime contribution as a government documents librarian. Libraries, will retire effective June 30, 2004. Monson joined the University Libraries staff in 1968 as a serials cataloger. Over the course of her career she assumed increasingly responsible positions within the Libraries’ technical services department. For the last 14 years she has served as the department manager for the entire technical services operation. Mary Noble, monographic cataloging librarian in Central Technical Services at the University of Iowa Libraries, will retire effective June 30, 2004. Noble joined the staff in 1968. She has provided expertise and leadership for cataloging activities at the libraries and served as a selector for sociology for several years. Kathleen Wachel, section head of monographic acquisitions at the University of Iowa Libraries, will retire effective June 30, 2004. Wachel was in charge of monographic acquisitions and processing of gifts-in-kind for the entire University Libraries system for 30 years. For ten of those years, she was also in charge of serials acquisitions. Wei-ying Wan, head of the Asia Library at the University of Michigan University Library, has retired.
