BCR is a nonprofit, multistate library coop­ erative that has served the library community since its founding in 1935, providing cost­ef­ fective library and information services. John Budd from the University of Missouri­ Columbia has been elected vice president/ president elect of the Association for Library and Information Science Education. Karla L. Hahn has been named director of the Association of Research Library’s (ARL) Offi ce of Scholarly Communi­ cation (OSC), effective May 25. She is presently collection management team leader for the Uni­ versity of Maryland Li­ braries. In addition to her fi rst­hand collection management experi­ ence at Maryland, Hahn has graduate education and experience in the bio­medical sciences and an MLS from Syracuse University. The Director of OSC is instrumental in creatively defining and advancing the portfolio for ARL’s scholarly communication program. Diane Smith, director of the Library and Information Center at Bunker Hill Community College (BHCC), has been chosen to partici­ pate in the National Institute for Leadership Development LEADERS program, an interna­ tional program for administrators and faculty in higher education. It covers supervisory and human relations skills, planning and budget­ ing, and organization transformation. Par­ ticipants are chosen for their professional abilities, their inter­ ests in advancement in higher education, and the quality of their proposed projects. Ann Wolpert, director of libraries, Massachu­ setts Institute of Technology, recently began a one­year term as president of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL). The Board is the governing body of the association and rep­ resents the interest of ARL member libraries in directing the business of the association, including establishing operation policies, budgets, and fiscal control; modifying the ARL mission and objectives; and representing ARL to the community. Diane Smith Appointments Elaine K. Didier has been named director of the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library and Museum. Prior to this appointment, Didier was a professor and former dean of the Kresge Library at Oakland University in Michigan. In announcing his se­ lection, Ford Library Archivist John Carlin remarked that he was most impressed with Didier’s ideas on how to use today’s technolo­ gy to expand education outreach efforts at the library and museum. Didier February 2005 141 C&RL News addition to her work at Oakland University, Didier has served in a number of positions at the University of Michigan, including interim director of Academic Outreach, associate dean of the Rackham School of Graduate Studies, and director of Information Resources at the School of Business Administration. She has also served as adjunct associate professor for the School of Information and director of the Erasmus/Michigan Master of Business Informatics Program. She is currently serving as an elected member to the Executive Board of ACRL and represents the association on the ALA Council. Didier is a past­president of the Michigan Library Association. Joyce Meldrem has been named library director of the Loras College Library in Dubuque, Iowa. Lynn Sutton has been named director of the Z. Smith Reynolds Library at Wake Forest Uni­ versity. Previously, Sutton served as interim associate dean (1999–2001) and eventually associate dean (2002–2004) of the library system at Wayne State University in Detroit. While at Wayne State, Sutton also served as director of the David Adamany Undergradu­ ate Library and director of the Science and Engineering Library. Jeff Trzeciak, former director of Wayne State University’s Library Computing and Media Services, has been appointed associate dean of the Wayne State University Library System. Trzeciak brings to the Library System more than 18 years of library experience. He has spearheaded several successful grant propos­ als, including three Institute of Museum and Library Services at over $1 million, and was also named one of Library Journal’s 2004 “Movers and Shakers.” Derik Badman has been named access service librarian for the Ambler Campus Li­ brary of Temple University. Lara Barrett has been appointed under­ graduate services librarian at the University of Washington Libraries. Jeff Barton is now manager of the library at the Brooklyn Historical Society. Barry N. Brown is now head, access and collections services division at the University of Montana­Missoula Libraries. Jennie Burroughs has been named gov­ ernment documents/reference librarian at the University of Montana­Missoula Libraries. Charles Cobine has been appointed as­ sistant electronic reference services librarian at the University of North Carolina­Chapel Hill. Samantha Schmehl Hines has been appointed outreach coordinator/reference librarian at the University of Montana­Mis­ soula Libraries. Alex R. Hodges is now reference and instruction librarian at American University. Jon Jablonski has been appointed to the Nancy and David Petrone MAP/GIS li­ brarian position at the University of Oregon Libraries. Deborah Nolan Lambert is now associ­ ate director of the Z. Smith Reynolds Library at Wake Forest University. Beth Rowe has been appointed regional documents librarian at the University of North Carolina­Chapel Hill. Sue Samson is now head, information and research services division at the Univer­ sity of Montana­Missoula Libraries. Mary Scanlon has joined Wake Forest University as reference librarian/business and economics librarian. Nicolette Schneider has been appointed reference and access services librarian in the Special Collections Research Center at Syra­ cuse University Library. Karen Williams is now associate univer­ sity librarian for academic programs at the University of Minnesota. R e t i r e m e n t s Don Kelsey retired from the University of Minnesota Libraries in June 2004 after nearly forty years of service. Kelsey held various C&RL News February 2005 142 positions including assistant to the university librarian, preservation officer, and library space officer. He served in leadership roles in two large renovation projects and in the construction of the Elmer L. Andersen Library. He has been active in the Minnesota Library Association, the Research Libraries Group, and ALA’s Library Administration and Manage­ ment Association from which he received a certificate of appreciation for his outstanding contributions to the division and for promot­ ing effective facilities planning for libraries. Deaths Virginia Clark, former Kenyon College librar­ ian, has died. Clark joined the staff of the Ke­ nyon College library in 1961. She later became the assistant editor for reviewing at the newly founded publication Choice: Books for College Libraries. She returned to Kenyon to work in the library but continued to work for Choice in various editorial capaci­ ties. After her retirement from Choice in Feb­ ruary 1994, Clark volunteered at The Women’s Library of London Metropolitan University. When in London, Clark performed with sev­ eral choral groups at major venues around the city. South Place Ethical Society bestowed on Clark the title of honorary assistant to the librarian in recognition of the research and assistance she provided the society. Daniel F. Kissane, 41, reference and instruc­ tion librarian at Milne Library, State University of New York, College at Oneonta, died unex­ pectedly November 19 from a heart attack. Kissane joined the Milne Library staff in 1997 as a systems librarian. He transferred to the refer­ ence department in 2001 where reference desk assistance and teaching were two of his main responsibilities. He shared in the teaching of the library’s credit course and taught course­ integrated classes in a variety of subject areas. He was involved with both state and national library associations. A member of the State University of New York Librarians Association, Kissane served as Milne’s elected delegate and was on the association’s Automation & Infor­ mation Technology Committee. As a member of the Young Adult Library Services Associa­ tion of the ALA, he served on the Outstanding Books for the College Bound Committee for two years. A member of ACRL’s Instruction Section, he participated on its Preconference Planning Chicago 2005 Committee. Margaret E. Monroe, 90, retired professor at the University of Wisconsin­Madison’s Library School, has died. Throughout Monroe’s dis­ tinguished career she served in professional leadership roles in New Jersey and Wisconsin and at the national level. She was president of the American Association of Library Schools and of ALA’s Adult Services Division, served twice on the ALA Council, and chaired the ALA Committee on Accreditation for master’s degree programs in library science. Monroe was known for her keen intellect, her rigorous scholarship and her commitment to library outreach services to adults and underserved groups. She was the author of four published books on public librarianship and a host of research reports and journal articles. February 2005 143 C&RL News
