jan06b.indd ACRL candidates for 2006 A look at who’s running for offi ce Cynthia Steinhoff Vice-president/President-elect Cynthia Steinhoff is director of the Anne Arundel Community College library, a posi­ tion she has held since 2001. Since 1983, she has held numerous positions at Anne Arun­ del Community Col­ lege including acting director of the library (2000–01), systems and collection development librarian (1994–2000), collection develop­ ment librarian (1993–94), and acquisitions librarian (1983–93). Steinhoff also served as assistant librarian at the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (1981–83). Her activities in ACRL include serving as cochair of the 2007 ACRL National Confer­ ence Invited Papers Subcommittee (2005–07) and as a member of the Choice Editorial Board (2003–07). Steinhoff is also chair of the ACRL Community and Junior College Library Section (CJCLS) Nominations Commit­ tee (2005–06), and she served as CJCLS chair (2002–03). She was a member of the Excel­ lence in Academic Libraries Award Selection Committee (2004–05), was active on the CJ­ CLS Ad Hoc Standards Committee (2000–03), and was CJCLS secretary (1998–99). Her work with state and regional library associations has included membership in the Maryland Library Association, with ser­ vice as chair of the Strategic Planning Team (2004–present), president (2000–01), second vice president and annual conference chair (1997–98), and secretary (1994–96). She is involved with the Maryland Community College Library Consortium (1992–present), and she is currently serving a term as chair (2005–06). Steinhoff is also active with Citizens for Maryland Libraries (1999–present) and Potomac Technical Processing Librarians (1984–present) and was involved with Mary­ land Interlibrary Loan (1984–95). Steinhoff was awarded the Anne Arundel Community College Board of Trustees Pro­ fessional Development Award (2003), the ACRL/CJCLS Learning Resources Leadership Award (2002), and the YWCA of Annapolis and Anne Arundel County Tribute to Women in Industry Award (1999). Anne Arundel Community College Library was awarded the ACRL Excellence in Academic Libraries Award (2002). Her publications include “Book review,” Community and Junior College Libraries, spring 2000, and “The coming restructuring of the library books vendor: A conference program report,” Library Collections, Acquisi­ tions and Technical Services, fall 2000. Steinhoff received her BS from Edinboro State University, her MLS from Clarion Uni­ versity of Pennsylvania, and her MBA from the University of Baltimore. Julie Todaro is dean of library services at Austin Community College, a position she has held since 2001. From 1984 to 2001, she was head librarian at the Austin Community College Rio Grande Campus. Todaro also served as assistant professor at the Univer­ sity of Michigan’s School of Information (1980–84). C&RL News January 2006 28 Julie Todaro Her activities in ACRL include serv­ ing on the Grassroots Library Advocacy Presidential Task Force (2004–06), as a member of the C&RL News Editorial Board (2002–06), and as chair of the Council of Liaisons (2003–06), of which she was also a member (1988–90, 2000–03). Todaro served as cochair of the National Conference In­ vited Papers Subcommittee (2003–05), and as cochair of the Institute for Information Literacy (1997–99). Todaro’s work with state and regional associations has included membership in the Texas Library Association (TLA), with service as chair of the Legislative Committee (2003–05), chair of the College and Univer­ sity Library Division (1992–94), member of the Tall Texans Lead­ ership Committee on Implementation (1992– 94), and chair of the President’s Committee on Committees (2004). She also served a term as TLA president (2000–01). She has been involved with the Ameri­ can Association of Community Colleges as a commission member (2001–05) and was a Board member for Connections: A Resource Center for Childcare Providers and Parents Organization (1994–2004), during which time she also served a term as president. Todaro was an advisory commission member of the Austin Public Library (1992–97), and served on the Texas State Library and Archives Committee as a Library Services and Technology Act Advisory Board member (1989–92). She is also involved with the Texas Book Festival Advisory Board (1996–present). Todaro was selected as one of the “2005 Profiles in Power” by the Austin Business Journal (2005) and was awarded a LAMA Cer­ tificate of Recognition for her column “Truth is out there” (2004). The Austin Community College Library Services Information Literacy Program was selected as an ACRL Institute for Information Literacy Best Practice (2002), and the library was awarded the ACRL Excellence in Academic Libraries Award (2001). Todaro was awarded the YWCA’s Austin Educator of the Year Award (1999), and she was TLA’s Librarian of the Year (1996). She is a columnist for LAMA Journal (“The truth is out there,” 1997–present) and Community and Junior College Librar­ ies (Haworth) (“Nothing but net,” 1996– present); she is coauthor of Extraordinary customer service (working title) (Neal­ Schuman, 2006). Todaro received her MLS from the Uni­ versity of Texas­Austin and her Ph.D. from Columbia University’s School of Library Service.
