A p p o i n t m e n t s Steven Bowers has been appointed the new director of the Detroit Area Library Network (DALNET). Hosted at Wayne State Univer­ sity since 1985, DALNET includes hospital, private academic libraries, community col­ leges, special libraries such as the DIA and the Henry Ford, the Detroit Public library system, and Wayne State University Librar­ ies. DALNET members collectively serve a region of four million people. Bowers has been at Wayne State since 2005, serving first as systems librarian and later as interim director of DALNET. Michael D. Miller has been appointed dean of library services at Cal Poly Kennedy Li­ brary. Currently serving as director of the four Arts and Engineering Libraries and interim director of the three Health Sciences Librar­ ies at the University of Michigan, Miller will succeed Hiram Davis, who retired in June af­ ter 10 years of service to Cal Poly. Miller will begin his new position effective August 14. Kenley Neufeld has been appointed as li­ brary director for Santa Barbara City College (SBCC). Neufeld has served as the technol­ ogy librarian at SBCC for the past year and was the instructional services librarian at Fresno City College from 2001–2005. Sarah Pritchard has been appointed the Charles Deering McCormick university li­ brarian at Northwestern University. Elizabeth Bowman has been appointed as the faculty outreach and collection develop­ ment librarian at Santa Barbara City College. Catherine Car son joined Columbia University’s Rare Book and Manuscript Library as an archivist for the Amnesty International USA collection in the Center for Human Rights Documentation and Research. Whitt has been appointed as­ sistant dean for collection management and acquisitions at the University of North Caro­ lina­Pembroke. R e t i r e m e n t s David F. Bishop, university librarian at Northwestern University, will retire in Au­ gust 2006. During his 14­year tenure, he led the library through a signifi cant expansion, increasing collections from 3.6 million to 4.4 million volumes, increasing the total an­ nual budget more than $10 million to $25.6 million, and doubling the materials budget from $5 million to $11.2 million. He also em­ braced new technologies to expand student and faculty access to library resources. Frederick Lynden has retired from Brown University. Lynden held positions at the Uni­ versity of California­Berkeley and Stanford University before com­ ing to Brown as assis­ tant university librarian for technical services in 1977. He later held the position of associate university librarian for technical services and director, scholarly com­ muncations and library researcher. He has spoken at many national and international meetings of ALA, IFLA, and ACRL. He served the profession as the presi­ dent of ACRL’s New England chapter, chair of ALA’s International Relations Round Table, chair of the Resources Section of the Asso­ ciation for Library Collections and Technical Services, and as member of the IFLA Stand­ ing Committees on Statistics and Serial Pub­ lications. He also chaired and served on nu­ merous committees such as the ALA Awards Committee, the Nijhoff Awards Jury, and the Frederick Lynden July/August 2006 443 C&RL News International Relations Round Table Program Committee. He will move to St. Petersburg, Russia for retirement. David Rich has retired from the Brown Uni­ versity Library after 36 years. Rich fi rst came to the library as an intern from 1966­1971 and returned in 1976 as special collections cataloger. During his many years at Brown, he provided outstanding service to the li­ brary and the university community and was active in many professional organizations including ALA, SLA, (British) Library Asso­ ciation, the American Statistical Association, and the International Association for Statisti­ cal Computing. Arthur P. Young, dean of university librar­ ies, Northern Illinois University, has retired after a 37­year career in librarianship. Young was active in various organizations at the national, regional, and state levels. He has served on editorial boards of four library sci­ ence journals and has served as the chair of the ACRL Publications in Librarianship editorial board and the Beta Phi Mu Mono­ graph Series. Scholarly contributions include 200 publications, among them 8 books and more than 40 refereed articles. D e a t h s Patricia S. Throughout her career, Henderson had been active in professional associations at the state and national levels. She served on committees in ACRL, Library Administration and Management Associa­ tion, and Association for Library Collections and Technical Services, including its Collec­ tion Management and Development Sec­ tion. Michael F. Kelly, 68, recently retired dean of libraries at the University of Texas­San Antonio (UTSA), died on May 17, 2006. He worked with San Antonio leaders to develop the library’s special collections and to make UTSA the repository of choice for the papers of area authors and organizations. A mem­ ber of ALA and the Texas Library Associa­ tion, he chaired the Council of Research and Academic Libraries in the San Antonio area from 1985­2000 and the Council of UT Sys­ tem Libraries from 1990­2002.
