Social tagging has emerged over the past 
year as a major trend across a range of Web 
services, and academic libraries are begin­
ning to explore the ways in which social 
tagging can be used to enhance the experi­
ence of their users. The article, “Creating the 
academic library folksonomy” (p. 80) pro­
vides a good overview of social tagging as 
well as some ideas for jumping off points for 
academic libraries. 

A host of innovative technologies have im­
pacted the teaching and learning landscape in 
recent years, particularly those of a social na­
ture. This month’s Internet Resources article, 
authored by Bryan Alexander of the National 
Institute for Technology and Education, cov­
ers technology from longstanding threaded 
discussion boards to the more recent prolif­
eration of blogs and wikis, within the context 
of the teaching and learning experience.
