A p p o i n t m e n t s Lori Mestre has accepted the position of head of the undergraduate library of the Undergradu- ate Library at the University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign. Mestre was the digital learning librarian at the University Library, an associate professor of library administration, and an ad- junct associate professor at the Graduate School of Library and Information Science. Prior to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Mestre spent more than 12 years working at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. She has been awarded several grants, written dozens of articles, book chapters, proceedings, and book reviews, and given presentations on topics ranging from digital literacy to diverse online teaching strategies. Mestre is currently writing a book titled Librarians Serving Diverse Popula- tions: Challenges and Opportunities. Christopher Schipper has been named in- terim director of the San Juan College Library. Doreen Bradley has been named director of user education initiatives at the University of Michigan’s University Library. Ash Brown is now electronic resources cataloger at the University of Michigan’s University Library. Russell Johnson, librarian in the University of California-Los Angeles (UCLA) Biomedi- cal Library’s History and Special Collections Division and archivist for the UCLA Neurosci- ence History Archives, and Marjorie Lee, li- brarian for the UCLA Asian-American Studies Center Reading Room, have been named 2009 Librarians of the Year by the Librarians Association of the Univer- sity of California-Los Angeles. Johnson was recognized for developing both an interna- tionally recognized col- lection of baby books with fi nding aids and cataloging for the col- lection, and in con- ceptualizing the UCLA Library’s Neuropsycho- pharmacology archive as an integrated collec- tion of materials and as a digital archive proj- ect. Lee was recognized for her outstanding leadership in advising the Library of Con- gress on establishing a national collection of Asian American archives, in reaching out to the community through signifi cant Asian American cultural events and publications, and in preserving the UCLA Asian-American Studies Center Reading Room collection fol- lowing a major fl ood, as well as her schol- arly efforts to index the leading English- language Hmong daily newspaper in the United States. Louise Hoffmann has retired as the San Juan College Library director. D e a t h s Edward Connery Lathem, 82, Dartmouth College librarian (1968–78) and dean of librar- ies, emeritus, has died. Lathem was editor of works by Robert Frost and others, and an au- thor. From 1976 to 1977, he served as president of the Association of Research Libraries; he was a member of the Overseers Committee to Visit the Harvard University Library (1978–84); and from 1980 to 1993, he was a member of the American Trust for the British Library. From 1985 until the time of his death, Lathem was a trustee of the Dr. Seuss Foundation. Martha Conway has been appointed associate director of the Special Collections Library at the University of Michigan. Karen Downing is now university learn- ing community librarian at the University of Michigan’s University Library. Karen Jordan has accepted the position of exchange and outreach librarian at the University of Michigan’s University Library. Molly Kleinman is now special assistant to the dean of libraries at the University of Michigan’s University Library. Melissa Levine has been named lead copyright offi cer for the University Library at the University of Michigan. Kristin Nielsen is now the interim head of reference at the University of Georgia Libraries. Linda Seguin has been named systems librarian for the Information Technology Divi- sion at the University of Maryland. John Weise has been appointed head of digital library production service at the University of Michigan’s University Library.
