May 2011 295 C&RL News ACRL President’s Program, Saturday, 10:30 a.m.–12:00 p.m., From Idea to Innovation to Implementation: How Teams Make it Happen. We all value great ideas. Unfortunately, few ideas get beyond the lightning-bolt thought or some scribbled words. The greatest innova- tions across time, according to new re- search, emerge from teams characterized by diverse skill sets not the lone creative genius. To move our libraries into the fu- ture, we must create and sustain teams that transition great ideas to implementa- tion. Jason Young, president of LeadSmart and author of the book Culturetopia, will share his perspectives on the importance of identifying and developing the essential factors that impact performance for any team or organization: leadership principles, management practices, alignment, and employee behavior. Preconferences Note: Pre-registration is required for all precon- ferences. Visit www.acrl.org (click on “Events and Conferences” for details). Tuesday, June 21–Friday, June 24, 2011 52nd Annual RBMS Preconference, In the hurricane’s eye: Challenges of collecting in the 21st century. Once perceived as peripheral to core library services, our collections are now viewed as central. Despite—or perhaps because of—this centrality, we face a perfect storm of increasing needs in a time of decreasing sup- port. How can we keep building and providing effective access to collections that will remain central in the future, fulfi lling our obligation to provide stewardship of the cultural record? ACRL President’s Program/Preconferences Join us at the 52nd Annual RBMS Preconference and fi nd out. Register by May 18 and save $50. http://rbms.info. Friday, June 24, 2011, 1:00–4:00 p.m. Action research: How to easily incorporate evi- dence-based librarianship into your professional practice. In a world that is increasingly data-driven and one in which data is easily attainable, librar- ians have new opportunities to both contribute to research and use evidence to improve profes- sional practice. Understanding basic data analysis also opens up opportunities for evidence-based practice not only in libraries but also in the uni- versity at-large. This preconference will introduce librarians to action research, show free tools for collecting and analyzing data, generate ideas for individual research, and empower users to engage in action research and develop evidenced-based practices at their own institutions. Friday, June 24, 2011, 8:30 a.m.–4:00 p.m. It helps to have presence: Strategies for personal and library leadership. Every librarian can be a leader in their library, on his or her campus or in the community. Accomplishing it is no simple task. To become a leader it helps to have presence. This preconference is designed to help you grasp what presence is and its value in building leadership qualities. Learn how to establish your own presence across multiple dimensions of your career. Friday, June 24, 2011, 1:00–4:00 p.m. Media Strategies for Academic, Research and College Libraries. Even in a world of Twittering and Facebook friending, mainstream media com- munication is an essential element for libraries seeking to position themselves as community leaders in information dissemination and re- search. During this interactive preconference, hone your strategic approach to media relation- ship building, sketch or polish a Media Plan, and build your interview skills. Jason Young
