In the
Welcome to the June 2012 issue of C&RL News. 
As we prepare to head to Anaheim for the 2012 
ALA Annual Conference, many academic and 
research librarians are thinking about the future 
of our profession. The ACRL Research Planning 
and Review Committee’s “2012 top ten trends 
in academic libraries” report, which appears 
in this issue, is an excellent starting point for 
discussion. The report examines trends that im-
pact academic libraries now and in the near fu-
ture, including communicating value, data cu-
ration, the mobile environment, user behavior, 
and new models of scholarly communication. 

Performing and presenting research is one 
way to keep the profession on top of these trends 
to create a more vibrant future. Laura Andersen 
and Beth Russell of the New York University Abu 
Dhabi Library present five “Lessons learned” for 
new researchers based on their experiences ex-
amining perceptions of e-books on their campus.

New technologies, and new uses of current 
technologies, continue to impact the higher 
education and library environments. Articles in 
last month’s issue examined two trends noted 
in the report—mobile access to library resources 

and patron driven acquisitions. This month, 
Cynthia Dudenhoffer writes about her experi-
ences experimenting with Pinterest, a hot new 
social networking site. Eleanor J. Goldberg and 
Michael LaManga discuss one part of the trend 
towards new scholarly communication models 
with their Internet Resources article, providing a 
guide to online resources for “Open educational 
resources in higher education.”

In this issue’s ACRL TechConnect feature, 
Emily Daly and Michael Peper discuss the Duke 
University Libraries’ collaborative approach to 
Web projects, using their implementation of 
Summon as an example, in their article “Building 
WIGITs.” Librarians from Bowling Green State 
University examine the impact of adding new 
resources such as Summon on library instruction 
in their article “Beyond simple, easy, and fast.” 

Make sure to check out the other features and 
columns this month, including an essay by Jason 
Martin on organizational culture in libraries and 
complete 2012 ACRL election results.
