Simmons GSLIS online
Simmons Graduate School of Library and 
Information Science (GSLIS) is inaugurating 
two new online educational opportunities. 
In the summer of 2012, Simmons will begin 
to offer a post-master’s degree certificate in 
Digital Stewardship (DSC). It will consist of 
five courses covering the concepts and skills 
needed to create and manage the content, 
technologies, and user expectations of a 
sustainable digital repository. It can be com-
pleted in three or five semesters. Ross Harvey 
is the DSC program director and will teach 
the first course in summer 2012.

In the fall, Simmons will offer an online 
master’s degree program with a concentra-
tion in archival management. It is designed 
to extend the current on-campus archival 
concentration to distance learners through 
online course work and internships in loca-
tions convenient for the students. The archival 
concentration has a significant preservation 
component.

Certificate in photo preservation
The George Eastman House (GEH) Interna-
tional Museum of Photography and Film in 
Rochester, New York, is launching an eight 
month certificate program in photographic 
preservation and collections management in 
September 2012. The program will cover the 
history of photography, photographic preser-

vation, collections management, photographic 
process identification, digital preservation, 
understanding photograph conservation, 
cataloging photographs, and developing 
photo exhibits. Students will study and work 
with the GEH Museum collections alongside 
GEH faculty and staff. GEH also offers a two-
year Master of Arts degree in Photographic 
Preservation and Collections Management 
in collaboration with Ryerson University in 
Toronto, Canada.

Tuition for the September 2012 to April 
2013 certificate program is $15,000. For more

NEDCC disasters Webinar
The Northeast Document Conservation Center 
(NEDCC) has mounted “A Matter of When, Not 
If: Preventing and Preparing for Disasters” on 
its Web site. The Webinar is a recording of a 
presentation made by Donia Conn in March 
2012 and runs for two hours. It covers the 
basics of emergency prevention, planning, 
response, and collections salvage.

The Webinar is available free-of-charge on 
the NEDCC Web site at www.nedcc.org.

Pest management
The Preservation Advisory Centre of the British 
Library has published Pests by David Pinniger, 
consultant entomologist. This 18-page booklet 
provides a brief introduction to managing pests 
in paper-based collections, including risks to 
collections, common species that threaten li-
brary materials, effects of temperature, relative 
humidity, cleanliness and building construc-
tion, monitoring and control, treatment of 
infested items, and institution of an Integrated 
Pest Management program.
