A p p o i n t m e n t s Thomas Horrocks has been appointed as the new director of special collections and the John Hay Library at Brown University Library. Horrocks had been employed at Harvard Uni- versity for the last 14 years, eight as director of the Center for the History of Medicine at the Francis A. Countway Library of Medicine and six as associate director for collections at Houghton Library. Prior to Harvard, Hor- rocks worked at the College of Physicians of Philadelphia for 13 years, where he served as director of historical programs and director of the library. Shali Zhang has been appointed dean of libraries and professor at the Maureen and Mike Mansfield Library at the University of Montana. Prior to this position, Zhang was assistant dean for col- lections and technical services at the Univer- sity of North Carolina- Greensboro Libraries (2005–12). Zhang also held administrative po- sitions at the Wichita State University Librar- ies, University of South Carolina-Spartanburg Library, Ohio Wesleyan University Libraries, and the University of Kentucky/Southeast Community College Library. Zhang chaired ALA’s International Relations Committee (2010–12) and ALA’s International Relations Round Table (2009 –10). She also served as president of the Chinese American Librarians Association from 2008 to 2009. Chris Tonelli has been appointed special assistant to the director at North Carolina State University Libraries. D e a t h s Joseph J. Branin, director of the University Library at King Abdullah University of Sci- ence and Technology (KAUST) in Saudi Arabia and editor of College & Research Libraries (C&RL), has died. As editor of C&RL, Branin continued the efforts of his predecessors to seek a way to make C&RL an open access journal, and it was during his tenure that the ACRL Board of Direc- tors committed to moving C&RL to this model. C&RL thrived under his leadership, and his contributions to the research base will enhance the profession for years to come. Before joining KAUST in 2009, Bra- nin served as director of libraries at Ohio State University and director of libraries at the State University of New York-Stony Brook. He also held positions at the Uni- versity of Minnesota, University of Geor- gia, and Kent State University.
