Mary Reichel will step down as dean of libraries at Appalachian State University, ef- fective July 1, 2013, and will return to the library faculty. Reichel has served as the library administrator at Appalachian since 1992. In 2000, she was named the Carol Grotnes Belk Distinguished Professor for Library and Information Studies. From 2001 until 2002, Reichel served as president of ACRL. One highlight of her administrative work was the completion of the $40 million Carol Grotnes Belk Library and Information Commons, which opened in 2005. Jidong Yang has been appointed the new head of the East Asia Library at Stanford University, effective May 2013. Yang is cur- rently the head of the Asia Library at the University of Michigan. Prior to his role at the University of Michigan, Yang served as the Chinese Studies librarian at the University of Pennsylvania. Yang has published extensively in the fields of both Chinese history and East Asian librarianship. Christy Allen has been appointed as- sistant director for discovery services at the Furman University Libraries. Ruth Baker is now learning commons li- brarian at Georgia Southern University’s Zach S. Henderson Library, in Statesboro, Georgia. Sarah Barbrow has been named special projects librarian at the University of Michi- gan Library. Barbara G. Preece is now director of the Loyola/Notre Dame Library Board of Trust- ees. Preece has been the dean of the library at California State University-San Marcos since 2009. From 2000 to 2009, Preece was the executive director of the Boston Library Consortium, Inc. Prior to that she served in various capacities at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale and began her profes- sional career at the Shawnee Library System in Carterville, Illinois. Preece serves currently as chair of OCLC’s Americas Regional Coun- cil and as chair of the National Information Standards Organization Board. Martha A. Rinn, associate professor and university librarian, has been appointed to an endowed professorship at Texas Lutheran University. Rinn received a five-year appoint- ment to the Luther W. and Ruth E. Sappen- field Chair in Library Science. The $2,000 per year endowment will allow Rinn to continue leading and guiding library and information services on campus. A p p o i n t m e n t s Henry G. Fulmer is now director of the South Caroliniana Library at the University of South Carolina (USC). A three-time USC graduate and 30-year USC Libraries employee, Fulmer began his new duties January 2. R e t i r e m e n t s Hope Barton retired from the University of Iowa Libraries November 2, 2012, after 26 years of service. She joined the libraries as a biomedical librarian at the Hardin Library for the Health Sciences and moved to the Main Library in 2005. At the time of her retirement, Barton was the associate university librarian for Main Library Services. She worked at the Temple University Dental-Allied Health- Pharmacy Library in Philadelphia for ten years before joining the University of Iowa. Active professionally in the Medical Library Asso- ciation, her involvement included commit- tee chairmanships, symposia planning, and legislative advocacy for the National Library of Medicine and scholarly communication issues. Barton published and presented on a variety of public and technical services issues. Rob Sloan Jr., reference and instruction librarian at St. Mary’s College of Maryland, retired January 1, 2013, after a career of 32 years. Carol Tobin, head of the research and instructional services department in Davis Library at the University of North Carolina (UNC)-Chapel Hill, retired July 1, 2012, after 18 years of service. Tobin supervised staff and oversaw reference collection develop- ment, budget requests, and the department’s organization and ser- vices. Tobin held prior positions as head of the reference depart- ment in the Thomas Cooper Library at the University of South Carolina (1987–93) and reference librarian in the Firestone Library at Princeton University (1980–87). She served as president of the Reference and User Services Association (RUSA) of ALA (2001–02) and as a member of numerous RUSA committees, including the Executive Committee (2002–03). She also chaired the division’s reference ser- vices in Large Research Libraries Discussion Groups (2004–06) and the Organizational Structure Task Force (2002–03). Tobin served on campus as a member of the UNC Faculty Council (2003–06) and has provided consult- ing services to reference publishers. Michael Van Fossen retired November 1, 2012, as international/state documents librarian in Davis Library at the University of North Carolina (UNC)-Chapel Hill. For 23 Carol Tobin C&RL News March 2013 174 years, he managed the state and international documents collection and served as the sub- ject librarian for inter- national studies; the curriculum in peace, war, and defense; and political science. He also regularly taught a course on government documents and mentored students at UNC’s School of Library and Information Science. Van Fossen provided leadership in the North Carolina Library Association, where he served on the executive board of its Government Resources Section, as an associate editor and indexer for North Carolina Libraries, and as chair of the journal’s 2007 Style Manual Revi- sion Committee. D e a t h s Marilyn Christianson, biological scienc- es, forestry and wildlife, and mathematics reference librarian at Auburn University (AU) Libraries, died December 20, 2012. Christianson joined the AU Libraries faculty in 2003 after successfully holding librar- ian positions at LSU and the University of North Texas. Virginia Lee Close, 91, former head reference librarian at the Dartmouth College Library, has died. She began her tenure at Dartmouth’s Baker Library in 1945, first in circulation and then in reference services. By the time she retired in 1993, Close had added the titles of bibliographer and editor of the Dart- mouth College Library Bulletin. In retirement she researched a va- riety of subjects with Richard Hoefnagel, a pre-eminent geneticist at Dartmouth Hitch- cock Medical Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire. Their culminating work was the publication of a book titled Eleazar Wheelock and the Adventurous Founding of Dartmouth College. William “Bill” Thomas DeJohn, 72, direc- tor of Minitex at the University of Minnesota for 27 years, died December 31, 2012, after a short illness. DeJohn retired as director of Minitex after serving in that capacity since 1984. Minitex is a joint program of the Minne- sota Office of Higher Education and the University of Minne- sota that works to im- prove library services to Minnesota. Under DeJohn’s leadership, Minitex expanded and improved library services. In addition, DeJohn initiated a cooperative purchasing program for Minnesota libraries that saved millions of dollars. And he was instrumental in securing funding to create the Electronic Library of Minnesota, a service that allows all Minnesota residents to access online licensed content (newspapers and journal articles). DeJohn served as community affairs librarian and later coordinator of loan services at the Missouri State Library in Jefferson City, Missouri. From 1974 to 1977, DeJohn worked as senior consultant, library cooperation, for the Illinois State Library-Library Development Group, in Springfield, Illinois. In 1977, he became director of the Pacific Northwest Biblio- graphic Center at University of Washington Libraries in Seattle. In 1982, he was pro- moted to lead that library system’s resource sharing program. DeJohn’s numerous awards include being named Academic Librarian of the Year in 2006 by the Min- nesota Library Association, and he won the University of Minnesota President’s Award for Outstanding Service in 2007.
