A p p o i n t m e n t s Martha Conway is now director of the Special Collections Library at the University of Michigan Library having served as interim director for 18 months. Linda Marie Golian-Lui has joined Ken- nesaw State University (KSU) as associate dean and library director of the Horace W. Sturgis Library. Prior to her appointment at KSU, Golian-Lui served as university librar- ian at the University of Hawaii-Hilo (2002– 12) and was librarian at Florida Gulf Coast University from 1997 to 2002. She serves on a number of ALA and ACRL committees, and her areas of expertise include educational leadership and mentoring. Golian-Lui was Florida Atlantic University’s Educational Leadership Outstanding Graduate Student in 1997 and 2005. Kevin Mulroy has been appointed A. J. McFadden dean of the Claremont Colleges Library, beginning July 15. Mulroy comes to the Claremont Colleges from the University of California-Los Angeles (UCLA), where he has served since 2008 as the associate university librarian for academic services. From 2001 to 2008, Mulroy served at the University of South- ern California as associate executive director for research collections and services and as assistant dean for contracts and grants. Before that, Mulroy worked for eight years as director of research at the Autry National Center. He also held earlier positions at the Getty Research Institute and the UCLA Library. Jennifer Sutcliffe Young has been ap- pointed systems librarian at Kennesaw State University’s Horace W. Sturgis Library. Adam Zukowski is now metadata librar- ian for the Albert S. Cook Library at Towson University. R e t i r e m e n t s Harold B. (Hal) Shill has retired follow- ing a 37-year career in academic librarian- ship and college teaching. After serving in several positions at West Virginia University from 1975 to 1991, he became director of libraries at Penn State-Harrisburg in 1991. In 2005, he left his administrative position and moved into the classroom, where he served as professor of Political Science and Infor- mation Studies until his retirement. He used his political science training extensively as a librarian, serving as the West Virginia Library Association’s federal relations coordinator, chair of the ACRL Legislation Committee, chair of the ALA Legislation Assembly, and a member of the inaugural National Technical Information Service (NTIS) Advisory Board. He also testified before Congressional com- mittees six times on various information policy issues between 1984 and 1990 and had a key role in ALA’s successful effort to defeat the Reagan Administration’s NTIS privatization initiative in the late 1980s. He donated 12 boxes of his legislative papers to the West Virginia and Regional History Collection at West Virginia University. Shill and Shawn Tonner coauthored two articles, published in 2003 and 2004 in College & Research Libraries that provided clear em- pirical evidence of the relationship between physical facility improvements and facility usage. Their research aided many librarians making the case for facility improvements and was featured in a September 2005 issue of The Chronicle of Higher Education. ALA has conferred Continuing Life Membership upon Shill. D e a t h s Eugene Paul Sheehy, 90, head of the Butler Library Reference Department at Columbia University from 1967 to January 1987, has died. During his time as head of Butler Library refer- ence, Sheehy continued the tradition of editing ALA’s Guide to Reference Books, an annotated listing of useful sources. He also continued the Columbia Libraries tradition of editing a twice- yearly column in College and Research Librar- ies, summarizing recently published reference works from 1963 to 1987. Sheehy was awarded ALA’s Isidor Gilbert Mudge Citation for distin- guished services to reference work in 1981. He worked as a reference librarian at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. (1952–53), and joined the Butler Library reference department of Columbia University in 1953, becoming the head of the department in 1967. Roger Tarman, 85, retired music librarian at the Rutgers University Libraries in New Brunswick, New Jersey, has died. Tarman held a number of management positions in the Rutgers libraries and developed collections for the Art and Music libraries. He was known for having an encyclopedic knowledge of music literature and, drawing on his experience as a musician for more than 50 years, could assist library patrons by identifying pieces of music after hearing only a few notes. He worked in the Rutgers University Libraries from 1966 until his retirement in 2001.
